All of Root's runs are on Haddin's head at the moment. Should of be grabbing them any day of the week.
That looked like a pretty hard one to me, I don't think Bye Bye Buttler would have managed to take that one.

Is Trott available? I thought he had retired.

He gloved it and he's been grabbing the trash some of our bowlers have sent down his way with ease.
He's been riding his luck Joe Root. He's nearly ended up back in the sheds a few times.

Starc is having a stinker. Absolutely all over the place.

This pitch to be frank is a stinker. It's providing stuff all. I can' only presume someone higher up ordered it to try and nullify our fast bowlers. The Pitches weren't like this for the NZ series.

The project in Australia with the pink Kookaburra ball does not have any relation to the England/Dubai project, and it is also further advanced with day/night Sheffield Shield matches having been played for full competition points for a few seasons now and club cricket leagues using the pink ball for weekday evening T20 games in the summer.

Forgive me for thinking that perhaps we were all, even if separately, working towards the same goal therefore mentioning the ECB/MCC project might be of some relevance

The real intent will be to play at least two Tests under lights in each of the following three summers, when the touring teams will be from countries where the time zones will work well for their TV audience back home.

I think that's very true. A quick bit of back of a fag packet calculation suggests that, with the times you've provided, that would mean a Test at Adelaide starting at around 6am UK time and finishing around 2pm. Much more palatable than 11pm to 7am!

As much as I like the Welsh their test ground has never produced particularly good pitches. The memorable results here have had more to do with teams messing up than the pitch (England clinging on to draw in 2009, Sri Lanka subsiding to lose in 2013).

Root 100 from 118 balls - fastest century in the first test of an Ashes series.

If England do win the match it will be so pleasing that the uncouth and unsporting Haddin played such a big part in it.

Johnson at the moment looking what he is in this country - a club 3rd XI bowler.

England 343 for seven at the close - at least 100 runs short of a par total on what is a very placcid pitch.

I have just seen the Root chance, and I'm sorry DownSouth, that was a dolly. He got a full glove to it, hit his glove and he dropped it. He made it look harder than it should of been

It needs to be given a touch more bounce and a touch more pace in it. Most people want a good contest between bat and ball.
Of course the pitch is no help if you bowl pies at the batsmen (I'm looking at you Mr Starc)

From the Aussie perspective knock england off in under 20 and have a bat.

One hundred up for Johnson - let's all give him a round of applause.

He's bowled better than his figures suggest. Gave Ali a bit of trouble early today. Gave Broad a barrage of short stuff that nearly undid him.

430 on the board for England. The amount of luck England have had in that innings is unbelievable. Balls just hitting the ground, Edges going to 3rd man, balls just missing the pegs. Frustrating to watch.

Our batsmen will make it look like England are bowling hand grenades.

Now we need Smith to get a 100.

So not only is the wicket the wrong type for Australia but England have reached 430 by unbelievable luck.

Dear me.

England are being too complacent, need to drop Ali (a bit-part player, can bowl a bit and bat a bit but isn't an all-rounder), play Rashid and maybe tinker with the batting order.

Ballance may have made a good knock, but if the Aussies bowl full at him, there's not much he can do. Vic Marks suggested switching Bell and Ballance around. I can't quite remember all the reasons for it, but it seemed a pretty good idea. Bell's current job is just to add runs, he should be doing more than that. Ballance seemed a bit of a weak link so high up the order.

So, I guess from his uncontrolled childish giggles that Joe Root has never experienced a cricket ball going straight into his, um middle stump before...

Somehow I don't think Alistair Cook will be impressed by the loyalty of the vice-captain in his time of great pain.

Haddin is now showing with the gloves the same form he's had with the bat since the 2013/4 series. Is the cupboard so bare in Australia that no other wicketkeepers are available? Johnson 0 for 111 proves that he has not got the technique to bowl with a Dukes ball - thank goodness the Aussies never look to county cricket and see the likes of Magoffin for Sussex and Faulkner for Lancs picking up wickets with the dukes ball. Arrogant or what?

With him going off the ground I'd thought he's done a James Kelly.

It's Haddin or Wade. Haddin lesser of two evils.

Peter Nevill is on tour and he seems to be hair apparent for Haddin's job.

I was expecting a bit more carnage overnight. Expecting us to be 7-8 down at Stumps. We need to get even on the scoreboard or we won't win. With Watson at the crease I don't hold my hopes up.
Smith and Clarke didn't treat Ali enough respect. He's slightly better than a part timer.

On to today's play:
If you want to know why I despise Watson you've just seen it. Get's a start. Bog standard LBW and like normal he reviews.

73-3 which means England are in a bit of danger but the lead is still 195. Figure England need to get to 200 which would leave Australia needing 322 which should be sufficient for an England win. More of course would be better! ;)

A 150 would do it nicely. For some reason we struggle with a low total. It's like our side thinks "Knock this off quickly and head off for a round at the golf course"

If by some miracle this test is still going by stumps tommrow we might be saved by rain.

A typical commuter-belt part of north-west England
Have been out all day..."taken shopping in Manchester"....<(

I see Jimmy Anderson finished with 18.5-6-43-3 in the Australian first innings.

England 191-4....a lead of 313 runs...with two full days still to play after today.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

A late flourish by England takes them on to 289 all out....Setting Australia a target of 411 runs to win over the last two days

Johnson's combined innings match analysis was 41-5-180-2

Last time a total like this was chased down. Don Bradman was playing and boy do we need the don out there. This one will be more than likely over by just after tea barring some miracle. It will require some class from our batsmen which to be frank only Rodgers showed.

England might actually win this test - visitors 106/5.
Might? You've got this in the bag. Our top six are beyond useless. Mind you everyone's known that for a while. Last summer it was our bowling attack getting us out of trouble multiple times after our batsman failed.
We're playing billionaire cricket and it's kicking us in the backside. It's like the world cup match at Eden Park against NZ. We got carried away with it being the size of my backyard.

I'm struggling to get why Clarke played that shot. There's just no need to be slashing at stuff like that.

Watson will make a solid 23 before going out LBW.

Well done England. Way too good for us.

Edit:
Haddin finished the test on -105.
Can England wrap this up by 12:30. Us on the east coast want an early night.
