Come off it, Broad's treatment has been no worse than what Warner and Clarke were copping all around the tour of England, the drunken football louts who make up the England cricket supporter base having been whipped into a frenzy by Anderson and Swann. If the English fans had booed the Indian national anthem the way they did to the Australian anthem at every match the ICC anti-racism code would have had the matches played in empty stadiums or the match result awarded to the visiting side.

What we've learned this tour is that the Australians are mentally tough enough to take it as well as dish it, while the English players are like eggs - a thin shell on the outside and all runny mush once you crack them. Jimmy Popgun has had the worst of it, he let it affect his on-field performance while Broad has showed he's actually capable of shutting it out.

Getting some players who have enough mental toughness to play international cricket will need to be England's first priority, only after that will they be in a position to start addressing their inability to keep pushing on once they've taken the fifth wicket.

The difference is more the lack of pride shown by England's lower order once the specialist batsmen are all done, compared to the fight put up by Johnson, Harris, Siddle and Lyon every time they get to bat.

Do the England bowlers even do batting practice in the nets working with the batting coaches? If not, this could be an area to make an immediate improvement with those which resist the idea thanked for their contribution and those willing to have a crack given the support needed to not collapse like a house of cards.

Surprised that you mention 'lack of pride'....I'm not sure that is the reason, to me (and it somewhat pains me to say it!) the reason for the miserable showing by the England lower order has been the magnificent Australian bowling, led by Johnson. Swann, Broad, Bresnan and even Anderson have been able to stick around and score runs against lesser attacks (including previous Australian ones) but not this time. It is always said that good fast bowling should be able to sweep away the tail and this has been a clear example.

At least, the last two English batsmen managed a stand to ensure that the follow-on could not be enforced.

Extras did well and managed to finish with 9 and was the sixth highest scorer for England. Perhaps a move up the batting order ?....

Australia have now lost their first four second-innings wickets with less than 100 on the board.

I'm hoping that Bailey gets himself out soon, if he gets a decent score he'll be on the plane to South Africa where he won't have the luxury of playing against pie chuckers like Anderson and Rankin.

He would get that at Australian grounds other than the MCG, he was big enough (pun intended!) to accept it in the good humour it was intended.

During a few very lean years in terms of team success for South Australia, the Redbacks fans would take out their frustration with the team by having a crack at Mark Cosgrove's weight which was always far worse than Warnie's. He had his contract suspended twice and was eventually fired for his lack of fitness which was leaking runs in the field and on the pitch.

I think that you mean in the Ashes, West Indies also beat England 5-0 in the 1980's (86-87, I think).

In the end, I just had to laugh, having followed the England team for over 50 years, I think that this was the most wretched display ever, far worse than the last 5-0 thrashing in Australia which was against a good side. Goodness knows why England have been so poor, probably a combination of a number of factors....but much credit must go to the Australian bowlers who bowled perfectly, accurate and hostile, much in the way that England weren't.

I think the central contracts has helped as well as hindered England's performance. Out of the 18 players who have played in this series these are the players I think should have a contract

KP needs to be dropped and told to get big runs in county championship, Panasar is not good enough at test level, Borthwick is a capable batsman, but still unsure on the bowling.

Butlet's be brutally honest, England was outplayed by a determined Australian side and they deserved to win 5-0. Yes it hurts to be an English cricket fan today but we can improve and the only way is up.

I have avoided this thread as my thoughts on the performance of the England cricket team on this series cant not, easily, be expressed using anything other than "industrial" language.

Ashes test cricket is the ultimate examination of a cricketers technique, ability, temperament, character, determination, courage, mental strength and nouse. England failed this examination dreadfully.

England were embarrassingly lacking in every area and nothing will ever deflect me from the opinion that they turned up in bertie big balls mode and expected to win. That was the plan. It failed. They lacked the gumption or intelligence to come up with something else.

England got lucky in the summer and this entrenched the opinion in most of the players that they were world beaters, they sat back and expected to roll Australia over again. This time (as perhaps they should have done in the summer) they got found out.

Australia were hurt and embarrassed by the summer defeat and went away and worked hard as a team to improve. They worked out each individual weakness in the England team and ruthlessly implemented the plan they devised to exploit these weaknesses to devastating effect.

The whole thing was shameful and a terrible embarrassment. I never expected a series victory but thought we might get close.
