Yes, I remember that! Of course, Warne himself was very cagey about the whole issue, but I don't think he would have been fit for a five day test!
Without looking it up, I think that Aus must have tried about a dozen spinners since Warne retired, only the two Nathans (Hauritz and Lyon) have lasted more than a few games.

Should be much better for England though, Yuvraj has been out several times but the umpires don't seem to be allowing LBW's today and Tendulkar has edged many times though the slips.
I was in the car this morning listening to Sports Extra and Tendulkar had survived by the skin of his teeth over after over and I can remember thinking, he'll get a century now.

Swann and Anderson strike to get rid of Yuvraj and Tendulkar, both should have been back in the pavillion much ealier in truth but at 230/6 England are right back in this one.
Should be much better for England though, Yuvraj has been out several times but the umpires don't seem to be allowing LBW's today and Tendulkar has edged many times though the slips.

Cook dropped by Pujara when he had 17. Expensive drop! Excellent day for England, Trott looked solid this evening too. I'm off to pray England can bat all day tomorrow and grind India into the dust.......

Can't believe nobody is talking about today! Cook run out in bizarre circumstances (for those who haven't seen it - the umpires were right, but you'll never ever see it happen again) for 190, Trott got runs, and Pietersen made 50. The upshot is that England are 200 ahead, with 2 days left on a pitch that is now providing assistance to the spinners. I hope Prior and Swann add 50 or so quick runs tomorrow, then set Monty at 'em!

Cook's run out was absolutely bizarre, I have learnt about it when I was training to become an umpire but its the first time I saw it ever happen. If he had put his bat down, then lifted it up again to avoid being hit and hit the stumps he would of been not out as he was taking evasive action.
You could say it was not in the spirit of the game but was in the laws (just like Ian Bell at Trent Bridge against same team) but fair play to England, and Alistar Cook in particular, just accepted the decision without making any complaints and got on with it (but I do think the fact we were about 50 runs ahead at time with 7 more wickets remaining helped)
Ideal scenario for day 4, Prior and Swann bat for an hour or until we score 60-70 runs before declaring before lunch, then set the bowlers on a fragile Indian batting order

Unfortunately, the remaining England last few wickets fell cheaply but a total of 523 all out must have seemed daunting to India. However, they made a good opening partnership, but as the day progressed, Anderson, Finn, Panesar and Swann all took wickets and it took a determined innings of 83 not out from Ashwin to help to stave off what was looking like an innings defeat with a day to spare and they closed for the day at 236-9. This is only a lead of 32 runs, with just the last pair at the wicket.

The last wicket for India fell when Anderson bowled Ohja for 3, but that last wicket had added 50 runs for India, with the final score being 247 all out.
England must have decided to give the home fans an outside glimmer of hope when they reached 8-3, with Cook, Trott and Pietersen all dismissed, but Bell put matters back into perspective with 28 from 28 balls, with the score being 41-3 when victory ensued by seven wickets.

Top performance, winning in India should not be underestimated, how sporting of us to give the Indian's a glimmer of hope by losing 3 quick wickets

It's certainly at odds with what we have become used to in the last few years in terms of scoring rate, I do recall going to a Test at The Oval in the early 1980's v NZ where only about 180 runs were scored in the day - awful pitch (like this one) and Chris Tavare....
Whilst it certainly is the most thrilling cricket I do think it's helping to set up a very interesting end to the series. All three results are most certainly still on the cards. That being said the pitch really has been awful!

Sadly cricket has lost two very prominent media commentators over the past couple of days, Tony Greig and CMJ. The latter was more 'my cup of tea' and his thoughtful commentary will be sorely missed on TMS. Tony Greig was, to me, quite different, almost Australian but at heart he was always an ex-England captain, and occasionally made sure his fellow Aussie commentators never forgot it!

I quite agree. He was only 67 as well.

Looking at the English fast bowling attack in this mini-series, does anyone feel that there is a certain lack of quality in the opening pair of fast bowlers when compared with Anderson and Broad ?

Enjoyed the first test of Aus v Ind series, Aus selection very reminiscent of Eng in the first test last year in playing only one (admittedly not very good) spinner and suffering the consequences...and Aus doesn't have a spinner of Monty Panasar's quality to bring in. worth keeping an eye on this series before the Ashes, Aus still very much in transition (or turmoil, depending how you look at it)

Turned on the TV last night at 22h00 and saw the score, 20-3, thought I was watching the Australia game for a minute! Very bad day for England yesterday, never ceases to amaze me how poor they can be at times (and it has always been thus!), looking for a much better performance for the rest of this match.
I went to bed in disgust when Root got out!

Yes they are infuriating because we know how good they can be but they will never be as brilliant as the Australians of the past till they can be more consistent.
This first test is almost certainly lost already so not a good start.

It is rather strange to note that more than one of the English top-order batsmen decided to have an off-day and New Zealand then used the time still allowed to put on an unbroken century opening partnership in response.
