It was good to note that England won by 8 wickets. Ian Bell with 69 and Jonathon Trott with 64 n.o.

Man of the Match was Steven Finn with 4-37 from his 10 overs.

Just seen Warner's wicket on the highlights. How on earth the umpire could be in any doubt that it was out is beyond me. I don't think I've seen an LBW any more plumb than that!

And does anyone else gets as annoyed as me as to how often Finn touches the stumps or even knocks the bails off at the non-striker's end as he bowls?

Was at the game today and it was a cracking match. I have to agree with the above about the Warner LBW, even from where we were sitting we thought it was out! Only downside is that I managed to get rather sunburnt arms

Though seeing as a few days ago I didn't expect any play at all I can't exactly complain I suppose!

Very sad news for Mark Boucher, the South African wicket-keeper. After sustaining a freak eye injury, where his eyeball was lacerated by a flying bail, he has announced his immediate retirement from all forms of cricket.
The last Test against England would have been his 150th Test match.

I do wonder how this will now effect the South African squad?

Do they have a decent replacement, or will they end up keep chopping & changing till they find the right man?

AB De Villers is taking the gloves for the rest of the tour, but Thami Tsolekile has been called up as an understudy for ABDV. Thami has played 3 times for South Africa, all in 2004 when Boucher was ruled out with injury

MB will be a big loss for SAf. Seasoned campaigner, excellent keeper and gritty, stoic and determined batsmen - ideal at number 7. He's got them out of a pickle on numerous occasions and won them the series clinching test in the last time they toured. Helped Smith put on over a hundred in the fourth innings to win the match.

"A very sad end to a wonderful career" - from Alec Stewart BBC column. That just about sums it up. Boucher was one of the best keepers I've ever seen, and a decent batsman when they needed him to be. I hope that he doesn't lose the sight in his eye because of this.

I have mixed feelings of AB de Villiers taking the gloves past the England tour, hoping his batting doesn't suffer & has Tsolokile done enough to step forward?

What has happened to Kuhn?

It is indeed sad news, i hope he makes a full recovery. It will be a shame not to have him in the South African squad. Although it will benifit England hes not there, you always want to see the best 2 teams in the world at their best when going head to head.

Sad news on Mark Boucher's retirement, a fine an example of a wicketkeeper/batsman as you could wish to see on the International stage, all the best for the future
We lost on Sunday (for the second time this season) by 7 runs, but remain over 40 points clear, having played 2 games more than second place Goldsithney, a small 'blip'... onwards, might even play on a dry wicket sometime between now and the end of the season

So, if he takes a wicket with his first ball in the QF against Somerset, is that a hat-trick?

You win the Geography Prize for noticing that it was in Guildford (not Chelmsford) where the match was being played.........(Essex will have been rather worried by my posting).

Mind you, the match was ended very early for the day at 1500 which meant that Lancashire could not have either built a larger total or had a chance of seeing how Surrey would fare when put into bat. There have been two days now in this match time.

My understanding is that a hat-trick as so defined cannot be spread over two different matches, as you so describe.

There are other rulings covering different innings in the same match, but that was not the conundrum that you posed.

Trust him to come back to form against Lancashire, but it must be a good batting track at Guildford as Lancashire reached 485-7 declared in their first innings. A shame that the final day was totally lost to the rain.

On the other side of the cricketing coin, last Saturday saw an amazing match in the Second Division of the Somerset Cricket League between Barrington CC and Huish and Langport, as Barrington CC, chasing the total of 195 scored by Huish and Langport, put three runs on the board before losing their first wicket...then were all out for 6 in twelve overs (Eight later batsmen were out for ducks).

He seems to be the modern day Geoffrey Boycott, he plays for himself & not the team & if your a Centrally Contracted player, you cannot pick & choose what versions of the game you play, none of the other team members do, so why does Pietersen think he can!

Interesting day today - Steyn wasn't on top form and doesn't seem 100% fit, Philander bowled quite badly at times looking a long way short of the form he's showed in other SA Tests I've seen, and Imran Tahir was simply awful. Great hundred from Cook, Trott gave it away I feel, as did KP. Still, 260odd/3 is a position I'd have taken at the start of the day if I was Andrew Strauss. Now for Bell, Bopara and Prior to build on that platform, get 500 and then have a go at their top order on what will hopefully be a wearing pitch!

A quite good description of their bowling efforts on the first day. If the weather can hold out, this has the makings of a most interesting match.
