England only managed 85 today against India in Leeds.
The visitors finished day 1 on 3 - 359, with Shubman Gill not out on 127 and Rishabh Pant not out on 65. Earlier opener Yashavi Jaiswal scored 101 before being bowled by Ben Stokes.
Tomorrow could be another long day for England.

England didn't bat, so they didn’t manage any number of runs.

Or, being test cricket, it could change completely. It's only the first day.

Overs not runs

Paying punters shortchanged again
Whilst that is a bugbear of mine, I will point out that India were the guilty party for a good bit of the shortfall with several non-injury breaks and the apparent need for extra drinks several times during the final session. However, it's a lot better than the two best test sides in the world managed at Lord's last week, with well below 80 on the day I attended.

I wasn’t blaming one side more than the other.

It’s a disgrace, especially given the cost of test match tickets, that it happens at all and the umpires do precious little about it.

Fining players who are millionaires makes no difference.

Having an arbitrary cutoff despite the weather being perfectly playable is a nonsense (although completely by coincidence it was just before the start of Surrey v Middlesex which Sky were showing on the same channel)

Something needs to be done, and to me it seems pretty straightforward:

1 - play until the overs are bowled if the conditions allow it

2 - pro-rata refunds on ticket prices

3 - fourth umpire keeps a running record of allowable lost time (DRS reviews, injuries etc) and this is shown on the big scoreboards. Any shortfall against that is attributed to the two teams (probably largely but not exclusively the bowling team as you note above) and penalty runs are awarded in a DLS type way

You weren't but the previous comment, "England only managed 85", can certainly be read as doing that.
Something needs to be done,
Most people attending test cricket don't seem to be too bothered.
1 - play until the overs are bowled if the conditions allow it
No, spectators need some certainty on how long they are going to be there. Many travel significant distances to attend.
2 - pro-rata refunds on ticket prices
That would have been worth around £3.00 to me yesterday. It's not worth the hassle.
3 - fourth umpire keeps a running record of allowable lost time (DRS reviews, injuries etc) and this is shown on the big scoreboards. Any shortfall against that is attributed to the two teams (probably largely but not exclusively the bowling team as you note above) and penalty runs are awarded in a DLS type way
That, essentially, appears to just legislate for the current situation.

Really?

No, spectators need some certainty on how long they are going to be there. Many travel significant distances to attend.

No. The minority who have to leave at a fixed time don’t see any less play than they would with a fixed finish, unless the players speed up. They’re no worse off, those that can stay are better off.

That would have been worth around £3.00 to me yesterday. It's not worth the hassle

It might focus a few minds if it starts to cost a lot of money, even if any individual doesn’t get a lot. And a lot of tickets cost a lot more than you paid

That, essentially, appears to just legislate for the current situation

No, penalty runs affect the game. That is the only thing that can effectively drive change. As I said before, fines are water off a duck’s back to international cricketers

As Haywain correctly pointed out 'it did change completely' England in particular Ben Stokes bowled very well and India were all out for 471 with Gill getting 147 and Pant 134.
Stokes took 4 for 66 and Tongue 4 for 86.
Zak Crawley didn't surprise anyone being out for 4 off 6 balls , leaving England 1-6.

England 209/3 at the close with Pope on 100 and Harry Brook very fortunately still there on 0 after being caught off the third no-ball of Bumrah and India's final over of the day.

Rest in peace David 'Sid' Lawrence, who lost his battle with MND today. Just listening to a moving tribute on TMS and poor Tuffers is in bits this morning. He was actually one of the players who helped carry him off the Basin Reserve pitch after his career ending injury. Heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and all at Gloucestershire CC.

How many times do we see a centurion who then falls very early on resumption of the following morning in Test Matches.

Pope out, caight behind off Krishna for 106. England now 232-4. Early breakthrough for India.

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

Brook was caught on the boundary on a score of 99 and the top seven England batsmen are now all out, as England after 89 overs are 405-7.

Day 4 of 5.

After 69 overs, India in their second innings are 264-3 with both Rahul and Pant together at the crease, with not-out 100s.

India all out for 364, leaving England needing 371 to win.

England 21-0 at the close, needing a nice round number of 350 tomorrow.

A great day for Leicestershire

Glamorgan started the day 305/3 but Leicestershire bowled them out for only 48 more runs, and then scored 389/3 by the close at a stonking 4.9 runs an over, with a maiden century for Sol Budinger and a century from Rehan Ahmed

What a great game of test cricket this is now!
It's the sort of test match you dream of - late afternoon on day 5 and either side could still win with a draw not completely out of the question.

Indeed....exactly why it's the best form of the game! Really tense stuff, but I have to say, the pressure is showing more on the Indian team.......!

And a glorious victory for England by 5 wickets with 14 overs to spare.

Yes, a very controlled run chase in the end.....and some shambolic fielding and curious bowler choices from a young captain to help the England victory.
A remarkable turnaround from India 430-3 half way through day 2!

That showed as the day went on. A few years ago both sides would have started the day regarding the target as out of reach, how times have changed!

The West Indies have had the best so far on the first day, bowling Oz out for 180, early in the 3rd session.
Sam Konstas was chosen to opened with Usman Khawaja this time, but was out for 3.
Travis Head top scored with 59 and Khawaja was out for 47.
The other 9 only scored 74 between them and 3 of those were extras.

The W. Indies dropped quite a few catches, but the bowling was very impressive especially Shamar Joseph. The wicket taking bowlers were:
Shamar Joseph 4-46 Jayden Seales 5-60 & Justin Greaves 1-26

Now let's see what the hosts can do.

Dreadful pitch for a test match, doubt the Windies will get more than 120

At Trent Bridge yesterday for Day 3 of the Nottinghamshire v Yorkshire game. The odd stat from my Yorkshire cohort was that Finlay Bean had personally faced 70 overs from the 119 that had been bowled at that point. He finished facing 489 balls in his innings of 224. That's nearly 82 overs, with a staggering 379 dot balls.

In the drawn match between Durham and Sussex today, there was a player called Ollie Robinson on both sides.
Not only that, but they share the same birthday....1st December! Sadly the coincidence is spoiled by one being 7 years older than the other.

West Indies finished on 4-57, trailing by 123.
Oz used 3 bowlers and all got a wicket:
Mitchell Starc 2-35 off 7 overs
Josh Hazlewood 1-13 off 7
Pat Cummins 1-8 off 6

Let's see what tomorrow brings.

Returning to the topic of slow over rates in test cricket, at Headingley last weekend the scoreboard was semi-regularly showing an "Over change" timer on the screen. This being test cricket it was completely unexplained to those in the ground, and I was unable to find anything online to explain it. However, this afternoon something popped up on my Facebook feed which provides an explanation. The quote below is taken from the ESPN Cricinfo news page and is dated today:
A year after introducing a stop clock in white-ball formats, the ICC has decided to introduce it in Test cricket as well because slow over rates have been a long-standing problem in the format. According to the rule, the fielding side must be ready to start an over within a minute of the previous one ending. They will receive two warnings from the umpires if they fail to do so. After those warnings, the umpires will impose a five-run penalty on the bowling team. Warnings will be reset to zero after each block of 80 overs. Also, the clock will be counted upwards from 0 to 60. The rule has already been in play since the beginning of the 2025-27 WTC cycle.
It's not clear whether any warnings were given during the Headingley test, but we do know that no penalties were imposed. My only concern is that there doesn't appear to be any possible sanction against the batting side.

Very close game going on in Barbados. Oz were all out on the first day for 180, today the W.Indies were all out for 190. Shai Hope top scored with 48 & Roston Chase got 44.
All 5 of the Bowlers used took wickets: Starc 3-66, Hazelwood 2-41, Cummins 2-34, Lyon 1-28 & Webster 2-20. Only 4 extras which I thought was impressive.
Now taking Tea and then we start again.

Good to see that Jofra Archer played in this game and took 1-32 off 18 overs, and is now in England's 15 man squad for next weeks second test.

He’s good but is he being rushed back too quickly? And is his body up to rigours of test cricket?
