Crewe to Stoke-on-Trent

Yesterday I arrived at Crewe at 2156 having spent the evening in Chester. I held a tday return ticket from Stoke to Chester.

The last train from Crewe to Stoke-on-Trent departs 2045. I was aware of this and had aranged for a relative to give me a lift from Crewe to my home.

A gentleman told me after the last Stoke train has departed it is possible to travel from Crewe to Stoke-on-Trent via Stafford by purchasing a single ticket from Crewe to Kidsgrove for £2.90.

I cannot find this journey on the National Rail Enquiries website and tend to think he was having me on.

Does anyone know if this is a valid fare and journey?

Crewe and Kidsgrove share a routeing point (Crewe) so only a direct train or the shortest route +3 miles is permitted.

I highly doubt Stafford is less than 3 miles more than the shortest route nor do any trains run direct but they might I suppose

Crewe to Kidsgrove is 8 miles, Crewe to Stafford is 24 miles, there are no direct trains between Crewe and Kidsgrove via Stafford. It would be a pointless service.

I did think he was wrong.
