Hello,
I hope this post isnt too long winded....
I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on the Crewe to Glasgow route. From next week, during school term times my daughter and I have to travel to Glasgow every Friday from Crewe (early evening), and then return every Saturday late in the evening.
Because I knew this was going to be a regular journey I tried to find out in advance the best ( cheapest) tickets to buy,and up until the last few weeks I have been using the scotrail website and buying advance singles for travel on Virgin trains using a family railcard. I have been attempting to buy tickets 12 weeks in advance, and have been paying £18.30 for the outbound journey and £8.05 for the return. The price increased over the October week Saturdays and I had to pay a bit more but generally I was able to get tickets for both of us for £26 ish. However these last couple of weeks no advance singles have been released. I have been trying to buy tickets for the weekend of 13th and 14th of November, and the following weekend.
The cheapest tickets available for us are £35 each way. Also, the outbound journey takes 3 hours give or take a few minutes, but again within the last few weeks the return journey time has increased to 4 hours. So, a journey we thought would be a total of 6 hours and £26 has changed to £70 and 7 hours. can anyone enlighten me as to the reasons for this.
We only undertook the commitment of this journey because the price and times were do-able ( is that a word ) and now we are panicking.
Id appreciate any advice/route alternatives.
Thanks
I just checked the scotrail site again before I posted, and they have released one advance single for the weekend of the 20th Nov at £26 but the return leg is still £35.
