There simply hasn't been enough rolling stock ordered to fill demand increases since privatisation.
Unfortunately they can't even bring out the old Mark 1s and 2s with Class 20 haulage either since its all gone now.

Considering a move to Memphis
Getting left behind at Peartree is quite unfortunate...

he could probably have squeezed on, but he had a bike with hime, there was no way that was going to fit !

Luckily only an hour to wait for him, as the 1740 ex Derby stops at Peartree too, but if I was him I would have pedalled to Derby and made sure I got on the next train there.

I agree, capacity on this route is an issue
As a single unit, would you know what type it was?
Typically it appears to be a Class 158 or Class 170

 Good old Rail Britain.

And this is the same TOC which carts fresh air every hour between Kettering and Corby.

Perhaps a more efficient use of resources would be to run Crewe - Derby - Matlock using 156s and pairs of 153s and leave Derby - Nottingham to XC.

With all them packed out 2 car 170s on the Birmingham-Stansted, im sure XC can magic units from somewhere unlike EMT, can't they?

No, he meant leave, XC to run the services they all ready run on the line ie bringing it back to 2 XC 170 tph.

For a few years, I used to commute from home in North Wales to work in Lincolnshire.

When I started, Central Trains ran a through Manchester Airport/Crewe/Derby/Nottingham/Grantham/Skegness service, admittedly using whatever they had available, but you could sometimes drop lucky with a 158 or even a 170.

Then the service was split at Nottingham. Then again it was split at Derby. Then it was reduced to a 153. Now I've taken early retirement.

I think its been said a few times recently. I can only see one solution to the UK shortage of DMUs and that is to order shed loads more 172s. We can not sustainably, practically and economically electrify quick enough to free up enough DMUs

I don't know the line that well, but it sounds like Derby - Stoke is the line time forgot.

Perhaps my idea for merging franchises into 12 large franchises would make things slightly better by making it easier for resources to be pooled.

In my rail map of Britian, the line would come under the Midland franchise, along with the whole of the current EMT franchise, the whole of the LM franchsie (except the Snow Hill Lines) and the XC 170 services.

I was on the 1033 from Stoke-On-Trent to Derby, train came in and it was 2 Class 153 DMUs coupled together, the train was nearly packed byt they were still plenty of seats, i never seen a EMT Class 156 on the Crewe to Derby route but i have seen a East Midlands Trains Class 158 on the route, i have seen a 2 car Northern Rail Class 150 arriving into Crewe on a Class 323 Diagram but that's another story for another thread

EMT are still waiting for the 4 ex-Northern class 156`s. Part of the delayed class 172/class 150 cascade saga. Like 4 DMU`s is really gonna make any difference, to the grand scheme of things.

Will make no difference at all, the're already on dibs to replace some 158s on riegonals to send more of them onto Norwich - Liverpool, nothing will appear from this on Derby - Crewe.

Perhaps a fleet of four carriage end-gangwayed Class 172 derivatives with non commuter seating and perhaps even a half coach first class compartment? They could displace all the Class 158s on express routes and cause a major cascade.
Liverpool Norwich, the existing Turbostar operated XC service, a restored Manchester-Skegness via Crewe train..... any others come to mind?

Yep, we could order 200 brand new 3 car 172s to run with northern, including a service from Manchester Exchange, newly built 20 platform super station, to a brand new station at the newly re-built Barton Aerodrome for the first SwineAir flights to the moon on genetically perfect pigs...

EDIT: Speaking seriously, I don't think anything will happen on that until the Inter-Reigonal Electrification / Stock acquisition strategy gets sorted.

This brings back memories to me. All you have to that coastline area from Manchester Airport these days is the First TPE to Cleethorpes, via Sheffield, Doncaster, Scunthorpe and Grimsby.

Last time i looked XC ran Services Nottm-Derby at 08/10 and 37 past the hour, an express and a stopper. That's 2 tph.

This is complimented by the 18 past Matlock and extras like the 1650 Nottm-Derby.

Would he make the 08 a stopper too? would the 08 or 37 call at Attenborough?

Trent Barton likes this.
