Are there any photographic restrictions at Crewe Station? As long as one follows the usual guildlines and uses common sense are there any problems?

Like every other station. Just dont use flash and you will be ok.
And if you're going to be there any length of time then tell them beforehand, it's only courteous. Tripods are a sore point at a lot of stations, platform extremeties are better than being in the central areas using them.

might also be worth walking round to the heritage centre, get a different perspective of the station from the signal box if you want to try something different, just double check its open on the day you are there

Why are flashes and tripods frowned upon?
Flashes can distract drivers attention or in dark conditions ruin their night vision/blind them and therefore are a safety issue.
Tripods are only frowned upon if you use them in stupid locations. So if you set one up at the end of a platform no one will mind. On the other hand if you set it up at the bottom of a staircase which is the only exit from the platform, then both passengers and platform staff will quickly tell you where to go.

One tip that i can say at Crewe is expect the unexpected! i seen NXEA Class 90's an Class 56 leaving Crewe by Road to head to the scrap yard, but you can show up and there no problems! you dont even have to sign in!

I've never had any problems whilst trainspotting at Crewe. If you're spotting freight it's not the best of stations to trainspot at. Especially if you're photographing, you may find yourself going from one end of the station to the other on several occasions as some light engines pull in at one end of the station and then pull out again without actually passing through the station entirely.
Also, some freight passes underneath the station. You can see the trains passing under from a footbridge off Platform 12 but none are photographable from the bridge.
Staff do occasionally walk down to the end of the platform to check that trainspotters are not doing anything suspicious.

There was a person at Warrington Bank Quay a few weeks ago who turned up with a DSLR with a flash gun. He was very quickly told what to do with his flash.ainsworth74 said:

Exactly! The wires are the problem for me. Obviously if you don't mind the wires then you're okay! In fact, that's quite a good photo.
