Crewe - North Wales

Hello all

I thought I'd try to take advantage of being based from Crewe for a North Wales All Zones rather than Manchester.

But its annoying that Crewe - Chester is a mere 50p cheaper than Levenshume to Chester! Of course, that's the Mid-Chesire line fare, so there is a significant time saving on the first arrival from Crewe than the first via Altrincham, but please can anyone suggest another ticket from Crewe to somewhere valid on the All Zones North Wales Rover? I'm happy to be as inventive as nessecary, I have a 16-25 Railcard and don't mind any route alterations.

If there's nothing to be done for it then fair enough, but it seems over the top £7.25 for Crewe to Chester!

If that does happen, how does Acton Bridge to Cefn Y Bedd sound? Would that be valid Acton Bridge - Crewe - Chester - Cefn? Any other way?

Finally is it likely that any ticket will be valid via Shrewsbury in addition to Chester, in case I come back via the Cambrian line? A long shot there methinks.

Basically I don't want to wander into the ticket office one morning at Crewe without the power of any knowledge. If there's nothing, nevermind.

An Alsager-Capenhurst CDR is £6.95 so a little saving is made. That's valid for Crewe-Chester.

(1) isn't that £7.25 too?
(2) pretty unlikely. Conversely fares to Shrewsbury aren't always valid via Chester when you might expect - eg Preston and Warrington (IIRC - checked this some time ago with the same thought in mind)

A bit desperate, but a return on the bus between Crewe & Chester would be £4.80. Service 84 which runs every 30 minutes daytime.

Can't think of another way of getting the rail fare down. Crewe-Chester is an expensive 21.1 miles.

Chester-Shrewsbury CDR is £6.60 with a railcard, valid either via Wrexham or Crewe.
Valid after 0830, break of journey allowed.
Nothing to stop you starting/ending short.

Stoke-Chester CDR is £6.95, also cheaper then Crewe-Chester SDR, same rules as SHR.

PS Shrewsbury-Wrexham-Chester closed for bridge works this week, all trains running via Crewe.

Only Shrewsbury - Wrexham is shut, trains are still running between Wrexham and Chester.

Thaks everyone very helpful. Glad ive managed to sort that out with a cheaper ticket, can't believe that Shrewsbury to Chester is cheaper than Crewe.

Also thanks for the tip about a Shrewsbury to wrexham closure.

Thing is the 84 bus takes 80 minutes compared to 20 minutes on the train, so rather pay the extra to get there quicker.
