I would like to go from Crewe to Newquay and back on a Saturday to do the HST, but a Standard Open Return is a huge £210. Is there anywhere that I could split the ticket to make it a little less? I need a SOR though. I have looked at Birmingham New Street, Bristol Parkway and Bristol Temple Meads, but to no avail. Any help appreciated. Cheers.

Birmingham to Newquay is a Saver Return, £75 with a Y-P/16-25 RCD. With a Crewe - Birmingham Saver on top (should be less than £15 with that RCD) it would come to no more than £90.

Surprised to hear CRE - NQY is a SOR though.

You mis-understand, I can get a Saver Return Crewe - Newquay, but I need a Standard Open Return (or more than one) for the journey.

Then it's not a huge £210  it's a much more reasonable 25% of that!

Yeah I know that, but it is still quite expensive. I was just wondering if an SOR from Crewe to somewhere and another from somewhere to Newquay might come to less than £210, but I couldn't find that "somewhere" so I thought I would come and ask you.

It seems from the ATOC site that SDS and SDR also attract PRIV discounts. So:

Crewe - Stafford SDR £9
Stafford - Wolverhampton SDR £6.20
Wolverhampton - Birmingham New St SDR £6
Birmingham New St - Cheltenham Spa SOR £24
Cheltenham Spa - Bristol Temple Meads SDR £12.60
Bristol Temple Meads - Exeter St Davids SOR £41
Exeter St Davids - Plymouth SDR £14.60
Plymouth - Newquay SDR £12

Total £125.40 instead of £210.

Thanks a lot! I don't know SDRs also received the discount, so cheers for that. Is there any chance you could link me to the page on the ATOC site, as I am having a few problems locating it.

http://www.atoc.org/rst/Updates_&_Reminders.asp

'From 7 September 2008, Standard/First/Open Single/Return fares will be known as "Anytime" and Standard/First/Day Single/Return fares will be known as "Anytime Day".

From this date staff travel facilities holders (safeguarded/retired safeguarded and TOC new entrants) will be entitled to discounts on “Anytime" and "Anytime Day" fares in the same way as currently applies to Standard/First Open Single/Return or Standard/First Day Single/Return.'

A couple of refinements:

Wolverhampton - Cheltenham Spa SOR is £24 - same as Birmingham New St - Cheltenham Spa, so no need for the Wolverhampton - Birmingham New St SDR.

Bristol Parkway - Exeter St Davids SOR is £41 - same as Bristol Temple Meads - Exeter St Davids SOR but Cheltenham Spa - Bristol Parkway SDR is only £11.80.

You can get a FOSW rover for under £20 on Priv which is valid South of Worcester, all the way down to Penzance so Newquay would be included and it is done in a 3 in 7 version so you can have 3 days out down there in those 7 days. You can also get an 8 in 15 one for just under double the 3 in 7 price, which if you bought it starting on a saturday would allow you 3 Saturdays on the trot to do the Newquay holidaymaker.

why not take advantage of the First GW special day return offer and get a ticket from Bristol to Newquay ?
all you would need is a monthly season ticket - see other posts. i think the cheapest season fare was 8.10
