Cononley wins my award for the most over-served village* in the country. A population of little more than 1000, not much car parking to speak of and yet 4 trains an hour in each direction!? Of course, no reason not to stop there really. The 13/14 usage of 169,850 is a remarkably good showing though that must reflect pretty much everyone who lives in that village using the train! Gargrave is a similar distance from Skipton and somewhat larger. It had 1700 people in 2001 vs 1080 for Cononley. Can anyone imagine a universe in which Gargrave gets 4 trains an hour? For completeness Gargrave had just 23,738 entries and exits in 13/14. I digress!

*Given there isn't a settlement in Swale (3,792 and 2 trains an hour which serve quite literally nothing) this title holds :D

A good little adventure there! Shame about only one set with 37s out in the end, and right to be disappointed with the weather as the coastal bits are nice!

What's the ching like on the coffee at Carnforth? I might be popping in for a shack scratch in late July, and yes I have decided when I'm going! If you're about feel free to say hi :)

What was the Tyne Valley like in your eyes?

If I recall, the Carnforth coffee was around the £2 to £2.50 mark. So usual station coffee prices I guess. don';t mind paying the premium here to be honest as the money goes into supporting the trust which runs the station exhibition and things.

I've no plans for July yet. PM me closer the time and I'll see if I'm about :)

I'll be honest about the Tyne Valley... I had my head in a book for most of the journey

I actually think the numbers for Gargrave are understated - there are at least 20 to 25 regular commuters who use the station to get to Leeds, plus most of the locals use it to get to Skipton as the bus is hideously expensive (compare £3.10 HLD-SKI day return with a Dales Railcard with, last time I checked, £7 for the same journey by bus - no wonder the previous company went bust) and, believe it or not, less frequent. The high numbers at Cononley I think prove if you put on a decent regular service the people will come, even in low population areas.

Not bad coffee prices to be fair, if it's not more convenient to pick up a Costa down the road in Lancaster, then I'll certainly be giving it a go.

Shall indeed PM you nearer the time regarding July, just over 2 months (29th July I arrive in the NW) to go yet. Hopefully the 350s and 390s will be kind to me when I'm up there and I can have quite the clearout!

Well gang, surveying the coverage map shows some significant improvements over the last five months, but still much to do. The West Midlands is a particular hole and rather inexcusable given how close it is to the Crewe base. So the plan is for a West Midlands day ranger in the next couple of weeks to address this. Techniquest's and Kite159's recent trips to Southern land also have me jealous - happily I have trip to Portsmouth due in the next month, so hopefully I'll be able to fit in a DaySave along the way. And then there is still one remaining Northern Day Ranger sitting on the desk - late June I think for that one :)

If you happen to do that WMDR on a Monday, do let me know :) Likewise if you want some advice on moves to make etc.

Glad Kite159 and I could be of service, making you jealous with Southern adventures! ;) I'm jealous of the Northern adventures you've been making, which has me planning more and more trips to the North West! Cheshire Day Ranger and Lancashire Day Ranger, not to mention a day in Blackpool doing the trams, are all in the pipeline. Might be venturing up for the Cheshire one next month, 15th June is currently free.

Hmm, looks like I'm about to enter another round of TPP Mode! <D

another good read crehid, the Cumbrian Coast loco hauled moves are very high on my agenda, unfortunately I've yet to get any time to get over for them.
Sounded like a cracking day indeed, just a shame there wasn't another alternative to ride behind too.

I think most people accept that a majority of stations underestimate the count, with a few exceptions such as Clifton Down and Blackrod, which are boundary stations (of slightly differnt types - Horsforth and Steeton & Silsden get the same thing as Blackrod... drifing way off-topic here but Blackrod has a rather stratospheric 589,026 for a middle of nowhere and just 1 train an hour, must be significantly overestimated by people using free passes and splitting, which can save a lot on that line).

2 June 2015: a West Midlands Day Ranger

Following the realisation that my West Midlands coverage was pretty poor I decided something had to be done about it. A day off work provided all the opportunity that was required.

The bus getting to Crewe got caught in the usual traffic but progress today was particularly slow and the last three miles was a crawl, so much so I was 15 minutes late arriving at the station. This meant I only had a few minutes to get the ticket at get to the train.

Now I was mainly winging it today, although a quick look the evening beforehand highlighted a very convenient bit of timetabling, which would lead to some prime shack scratching opportunities in my neighbourhood. So the say started with 350108 one stop to Alsager, followed a few minutes afterwards by 153311 to Kidsgrove (I got a "good morning" from the guard as I boarded which made my day :) ), and then a few minutes again before dud 323236 took me to Stoke-on-Trent. Two winners and new new shacks and I've only been going half an hour!

Short-term objectives sorted it's time to head towards Birmingham. I board 220014, and I'm now making it up as I go along (with a little help from Real Time Trains). I decide to bail at Wolverhampton as I notice there is a quick connection for a service to Shrewsbury which will get a big chunk of track marked off. This turns out to be 170635 and I stay on board all the way to Shrewsbury. The plan is to head straight back towards Birmingham but I have enough time before the next train to have a wonder round the station, taking in the fine array of semaphore signals here, and to grab a coffee.

I really like what Arriva Trains Wales have done to their 158s. They're bright and airy (much better then the drab Northern versions), and even come with power sockets to give the phone a quick boost! I retrace my steps completely, passing Wolverhampton and decide to alight at Smethwick Galton Bridge. I make my way to the high level platforms to find 172340 waiting on the platform so I board, just because it's there.

Now, I'd much rather be heading the other way and it would be good to get as far as Worcester, so I get off at the next stop, The Hawthorns, make my way across the platform bridge and then board the next train (172337) going in the other direction. There's an awkward moment for the passengers opposite as the tickets are checked and it turns out they're going in the wrong direction - they though they were heading towards Marylebone... oops!

This train only takes me as far as Stourbridge Junction, so I get off and decide to get the short branch to Stourbridge Town - 139001 is doing the (very bumpy) shuttle service today. It's lunchtime now so I find a nearby subway and grab a £3 lunch deal, before heading back to Stourbridge Town station. It's not a long wait before the Parry People Mover is back and returns me to Stourbridge Junction.

My short excursion into the town has worked as it's now only a short wait for the Worcester train. This is made of 172217 and 172218 (you know I don't think I've ever come across two consecutively numbered units coupled together before) and I stay on as far as the terminus station, Worcester Shrub Hill.

The West Midlands Day ranger is valid as far as Hereford, but I decide it's time to head back towards Birmingham (mainly because I want to be back home at a decent time). A short move is made on 158950 to Worcester Foregate Street where I am able to make the connection onto 170501 to Birmingham New Street. This goes via Bromsgrove, so more new track which is good.

As we arrive into New Street it's clear the cross-City line is in utter chaos. This is a bit annoying as I'd quite like to pick the train back to Crewe up from Lichfield. But there's still plenty of time to spare so I decide to just to head somewhere else for a bit and wait for things to die down a little. A quick check of RTT highlights a nifty return move to Tamworth is doable, so I board 170521 there and 170109 back.

Back at New Street chaos is still ensuing. No one knows if the trains are heading to Walsall, Lichfield or Redditch, platform monitors are useless, the destination blinds on the front of the trains can't be trusted and staff are as much in the dark as the passengers! RTT says two trains are departing from exactly the same platform at exactly the same time so this is no help either! I decide to just hop on the first 323 I see and hope for the best. 323219 pulls in so I get on. As we depart it's clear we're at least heading in right direction, so that's a start at least, but I still have absolutely no idea where it's heading! Most of the passengers on the train seem to have the same idea that I have: get off at Aston and see if the platform monitors there tell us something. Turns out I was on the Walsall train, so I stay on the platform (a whole load of others get back on).

323207 shows up a few minutes later. It's heading the right direction so I hop on, but this only gets me as far as Four Oaks. Not to worry as it's only a few minutes wait before 323203 pulls in destined for Lichfield Trent Valley. RTT shows a comfortable 10 minute connection there to get the train back to Crewe so I can relax a bit. 323s are normally quite speedy and accelerate quickly; this one was on a go slow today. We seemed to be losing a couple of minutes between each station, and and progress was painfully slow. By the time we get to Lichfield Trent Valley, that comfortable 10 minute connection became a mad dash to the lower level platform get 350117 which was just pulling in (in fact I swear I only made it because the train to Crewe was 1 minute late!).

Rather than taking this all the way back to Crewe I decide to get off at Stafford and take the more direct train 221118 (avoiding the need to go via Stoke, and gives me a more respectable 15 minute connection for the bus at the other end.

So there we are - all a bit frantic towards the end there. But I've made some real progress in clearing some required track and I should be able to polish off the rest of the West Midlands area in just one day (I think - starts planning already ;) ). Stats:

Total mileage: 266m76ch
Total winners for haulage: 20
Total new shacks: 14
Total cost: £16.35

I have another report from today to write up (yet another Northern Day Ranger), but that'll have to wait until tomorrow. Plus I have a backlog of fellow forum members' reports to catch up on - will get to them soon I promise!

An excellent day out there, despite the chaos in Birmingham! Very productive time had, and shame about the less than enjoyable run on the 323s.

So I typed up three reports yesterday, clicked "post" and then I had a log in error which lost everything I typed - grrrr <(

So we'll just have to try again, one at a time. This is the second time this has happened to me so please accept my apologies for the rushed nature of the reports, and lack of detail in places.

Here goes the first one... again!

4 June 2015: Northern Ranger No 5

It's yet another Northern Day ranger for me. I don't really have plans today, other than that I want to be home at a reasonable time later on. So to make the most of the day I set off on the first train I can from Crewe. And it's a winner: 323230 - I'm slowly managing to get through Northern's 323s on mandatory moves. Only 7 left now!

I get off at Stockport and decide to board the next train heading towards Buxton. 150135 and 156424 pull in bound for Hazel Grove - that'll do so I board and stay all the way to Hazel Grove. I notice that the wires extend down here, so I wonder why they don't use the electrics down here? Anyway, on the platform waiting the the next service to take me down the line I consult the timetable and notice there's a potential shack scratch opportunity to be had if I can walk briskly enough. I decide to go for it, making my way through the nearby hospital grounds and walking onto the platform at Woodsmoor, just in time for 150142, 156486 and 150115 to pull in. Three DMUs seems like a bit of overkill, but they're all winners so I'll take it!

I stay on as far as new shack Whaley Bridge, where there's a short fester. I really don't mind as the the weather is good today and is helping to show off the marvelous peak district scenery. I make a mental note to come back here for a walking session in the not-to-distant future. The next move consists of 156488 and 150146 as far as New Mills Newtown.

I now have a walk on my hands. I've driven through New Mills a couple of times, but never stopped to take time to walk around. I still don't have that much time today, but at least the walk allows me to take more in. It looks like a nice place and I'm particularly intrigued by the millennium walkway hanging over the gorge - another mental note is made to come back and visit!

At New Mills Central I catch 150141 to Sheffield. The 150 is a nice surprise and provides a relatively luxurious journey compared to the usual 142s that work this route. During the journey to Sheffield I start to think about where I should go next - Doncaster seems like a rather big omission from my Northern coverage map so a decision is made to head that way.

At Sheffield I board 144006 for the short journey to Meadowhall. There's a bit of time before the next Northern train to Doncaster so I make my way to the shopping centre where a Greggs sandwich and Belgian bun are procured for lunch. Back at the station it's then onto 158851 (the palindrome unit) to Doncaster - we avoid taking the line through Rotherham so I'll have to come back another day for this. At Doncaster I have just enough time to make it under the tracks to board 322481 to Leeds.

At Leeds I spend sometime decideing what to do next, but realise I should probably start heading back to avoid being back too late. I take the next available train to Sheffield: dud 144016. It's a long journey for a pacer, but it's going via Castleford which means a bit of new track for me, so every silver cloud and all that! At Sheffield I have to make my way all the way down the platform to catch the train back to Manchester. This is a very packed 142053.

As we leave Sheffield, however, we're immediately brought to a stop at the first signal and are stuck waiting for First Transpennine Express train to pass us. We get moving again after a five minute wait, but the going is very slow and we continue to lose time. We also spend a lot of time at each station, picking up plenty of walkers who've been making the most of the fine weather. It's good to see all of these people using the train but it's very cramped and as we get closer to Manchester we have to start turning people away.

If I want make the 18:30 bus home I need to be on the 17:38 from Piccadilly. If I miss it it's a two hour wait for the next bus. If everything went to plan this should be a nice and easy 11 minute connection. The late and slow running however meant we arrived at 17:37 and 15 seconds, giving me 45 seconds to make the connection. Unbelievably I make it! :D Thanks to a bit of luck with the platform allocations and some running through the crowds! Dud 323232 is on duty for the run home back to Crewe.

Another good day, helped by the lovely weather. Although in hindsight if I engaged in a bit of planning before I set of I could have achieved much more. Anyway, I've started to notice a worrying trend in that all of my trips are starting to get quite frantic towards the end!

Total mileage: 234m12ch
Total winners for haulage: 12
Total new shacks: 6
Total cost: £12.50
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Again, apologies for skirting around some of the finer details!

8 June 2015: Northern Day Ranger No 6
Thanks to a very generous person I've had some more Northern tokens donated to me. I decide to use today's day ranger as a cheap way to get from the Yorkshire base to the Crewe, although being a Northern Day Ranger it will allow me to get a fair bit of track bashing in at the same time ;)

I start today at the Yorkshire base, Hellifield, and it's 142091 all the way to Leeds. It's a 142 (which is rare on this route) but a very cheery guard has me in good spirits. At Leeds there's just enough time to pick up a morning coffee, before boarding 158752 which will be taking me to York.

It's then onto 142087. It maybe a dud but it'll be covering new track for me so worth it all the same. We set off down the east coast mainline, diverting at the Hambleton North Junction, so I'll have to come back for the route via Sherburn another day. I stay on as far as Brough, and make a quick dash across the bridge to pick up another dud, 158796, which arrives moments later. This will allow me to add the line to Doncaster in the map.

I stay on past Doncaster and alight at Meadowhall. Having scouted the location a few days earlier I head back to the Greggs in the shopping centre to pick up lunch provisions, before hading back to the station. If you read the previous trip report you'll have realised I missed the line via Rotherham last time. 142089 allowed me to correct this oversight. The train was bound for Leeds and I stayed on as far as Fitzwilliam, thus adding more track to coverage map.

Across to the other platform I saw 142091 approaching (the same unit I started with this morning), but in the intervening period 144010 had been attached to the back. For a bit of variety (and the fact the 144s have comfier seats) I made my way to the rear unit. We back-tracked our way back towards Sheffield, but this time I alighted at Swinton. A dash across the bridge here allowed be to board a late running 142024 to Moorthorpe (one of those occasions where you're happy the train is delayed as I wouldn't have been able to do this otherwise!).

The plan now was to take the line to York via Pontefract Baghill (more new track), but there was a 15 minute wait so I explored Moorthorpe station a little bit. It seems to have undergone a restoration recently and looks pretty good. I popped into the station cafe (which doubles as a sort of community centre) to grab a cup of takeaway coffee before 144002 showed up to take me towards York.

On the way I had a look at my West Yorkshire timetable booklet (very useful indeed!) and identified a shack scratch opportunity, so I bailed at Church Fenton. As unstaffed stations go this is quite large with four long platforms. I didn't have to wait long before 158793 showed up to take me to York. The next objective was to get the line to Leeds via Harrogate which I still hadn't done, so I boarded dud 150268 which would be taking me all the way.

At Leeds it was time to start thinking about heading towards Manchester and Crewe, but a consultation with the timetable highlighted a couple of shack attack opportunities along the way. I boarded 144014 to Halifax. I was feeling peckish, so the 15 minute fester here provided just enough time to find a Tescos in the town and grab a sandwich. Back at the station I then boarded 153358 and 155347 to Todmorden where a couple of minutes afterwards dud 150141 turned up to take me the rest of the way to Manchester Victoria. The usual walk is had across the city centre to take me to Piccadilly, where I find 323231 ready and waiting to take me back to Crewe.

So, lots of mileage and new coverage today. This includes the Dearne Valley line which only sees a limited service, so I'm happy to have that under the belt. On the down side you may have noticed it was quite pacer heavy today - I don't mind them as such but I wish the seating was more comfortable!!

Total mileage: 341m69ch
Total winners for haulage: 10
Total new shacks: 7
Total cost: £17.50

11 June 2015: A trip to Nottingham
Today I had to head for Nottingham for a work meeting. Work had purchased the ticket for me. It was an anytime return so while I was limited to my route I did have the flexibility to break my journey at various points along the way.

I was unable to get to Crewe early enough so pikced up the first train from Stoke-on-Trent instead. Yet more luck is had with the LM 350s as it's winners 350101 and 350119 to Tamworth. A dash up to the high level platforms meant I was able to pick up 170519 as far as Burton-on-Trent.

There was a ten minute wait here for the next train, so I decideed to explore the immediate local area in search of caffine - this was unsuccessful! My caffine needs would have to wait for a little bit. Back at the station I boarded 221139 to Derby. At least here I knew there would be a trusty Costa coffee!

Coffee procured I then boarded 156415 towards Nottingham. My meeting location was actually halfwayu between Beeston and Nottingham stations, so I decided to alight at Beeston now, and would leave from Notttingham on the way home.

Getting to Nottingham station after my meeting, however, was a bit of a faff. To begin with two bus drivers refused to accept my Nottingham Plusbus tickets (despite the buses having stickers on which said "Plusbus accepted"!). When the third bus let me on we then spent half an hour stuck in traffic. I'm sure I could have just walked it quicker... oh well.

At Nottingham station I boarded 158777 to Attenborough. I had a 30 minute wait here so went for a bit of an explore. After a few minutes walk I managed to find a few shops so procured provisions for the journey home (sandwich, crisps and a beer). Back at Attenborough station it was 153326 coupled to dud 153311 to Spondon, and I then only had a short wait for 170101 to Derby.

I now had a choice to make. I could either take the direct train via Uttoxeter or I could travel back the same way I came, via Tamworth. A quick look at the departures board showed the direct Crewe train would be running late so I headed for Tamworth instead, with 170523 and 170112 taking me there. At Tamworth is was 350116 and 350125 back to Crewe.

So a short A to B trip there, but was able to score a respectable amount of winners and some new shacks along the way!

Total mileage: 170m55ch
Total winners for haulage: 12
Total new shacks: 5
Total cost: £23.20 (although work bought the ticket so it cost me £0.00!)

Solution is to type into Word (or other word processor) and copy & paste it as a new post, to avoid the forum timing you out for being inactive :)

I believe Hazel Grove sees something stupid like 2 electric trains a day on peak-time Hazel Grove - Oxford Road services, but I would imagine once the line via Bolton is wired up and Blackpool is done, the Blackpool -> Hazel Grove services will probably become electrics.

----

Sounds like a busy trio of days, making good use of the excellent offer to clear coverage :)

Crikey you have been busy! Lots of productivity filling the books, not to mention dealing with coverage of track and mileage!

Doing well with Northern's 323s, considering you're not chasing them!

Yes, I've learnt my lesson now! The Northern offer has been great. I have enough vouchers for one last day ranger so need to decide how I'm going to use those!

Yes - June was never meant to be this busy! I have one Northern Day ranger left to use and a trip to Portsmouth next week, but I think things will quieten down after that.

Any plans to hoping over to the island to sample some 1938 tube stock (the class 483s)?

Hmm, Pacers... Still yet to experience one!

Enjoy the Portsmouth trip, take the train down all the way to the harbour if you can. Ignore the fairly horrible station forecourt, take a right into gunwharf quays and the view is fantastic :)

A flying visit I'm afraid so no time to visit the island... one day though!

Yes - the last few trips have been quite pacer heavy! They actually offer splendid views as the gaps between windows are very small, but your bum and legs will be feeling the pain after a while!

Well aware of what Portsmotuh has to offer, having lived there for 10 years. Drinks with a few mates in Gunwharf this evening! ;)

oh yes the pacer experience, leaving you wishing, you hadn't lived:lol::lol:, when the 143's were put into service in Newcastle, a mate of mine, a real railway zealot, decided to do one for the full route Middlesbrough-Carlisle, just so he could say, he had. I dunno what that mileage is but it's roughly 64 to Carlisle from Newcastle.
We just called him "Daft"

That's about 108 miles through! I'd do it on a Heaton, if...

-I was sat at the front two with the single seat facing inwards by me (more legroom)
-It wasn't more than 1/2 full.
-I wasn't paying

I've not done more than Newcastle-Carlisle on a 142 but i've done Skipton-Heysham on a 144

To be honest Richard, I don't believe I'd want to do anymore than that mate

I was due to head down to Portsmouth today to catch up with a few mates in the evening and to attend a meeting the next morning. Having read of Techniquest's and Kite159's recent adventures to Southern Land, and recognising my own pathetic coverage of this part of the country, I decided to build in a Southern Daysave into the journey.

First thing's first, however. I need to get to London. I'm booked on a cheap London Midland advance ticket which means a long (almost three hours) trip from Crewe to Euston on dud 350129. I then take the Victoria line to Victoria.

At Victoria I find a conveniently placed Timpsons to allow me to purchase a new set of shoe laces (I'd broken one of them tying up my shoe before I got off at Euston) and I pick up my Daysave ticket (which has been printed upside down) from one of the TVMs. I can now crack on with . Coverage wise I only have the Brighton mainline as far as Three Bridges, the Arun Valley line and the West Coastway between Portsmouth and Barnham covered. I also only have one Southern 377 marked off in the book. So, anything I do today is going to be productive!

I start off with a quick move to Clapham Junction on 455841. It's then onto 377457 for the journey to Horsham via Sutton and Dorking. At Horsham it's then a simple cross platform transfer to catch 377463 and 377139 to Gatwick Airport.

I'm slightly confused about my next move from Gatwick Airport. The platform displays tell me the train about to approach is a Thameslink service - no good for me as I can only use Southern trains. However, two Southern liveried 377s pull in. Slightly confused I see if I can track down a guard but it appears to be driver only operated. I tentatively step on the train to see if I can find out more there - the inside is plastered with yet more Southern stickers and the automated announcement also informs me it's a Southern service. Just to make sure, as I really don't want to get into trouble I ask one of the staff on the platform who tells me it's a Southern train so I can get on it. That's good enough for me so I hop on the mysterious units (377160 and 377126) to Haywards Heath.

(As an aside a bit of research the next day on RTT says this was a Thameslink service, although they are definitely Southern units. I know Thameslink and Southern are sister companies, but it really does confuse things when they use each others' rolling stock!)

At Haywards Heath I purchase what turns out to be the world's strongest coffee, before boarding 377472 to Lewes. At Lewes it's then onto 313214 to Brighton. With no other plans (other than I have to be in Portsmouth by 7 to meet up with a fewe mates for a pint) I decide to take the next Southern train I can find. This is 377474 and 377471 to Burgess Hill. There's just enough time here to cross over the platform bridge to catch 377105 heading back to Brighton.

While there's still plenty of time left I decide it's time to start heading towards Portsmouth. So I get on 313204 to Hove, followed by 377408 to Littlehampton. I have 15 mionutes to kill here before the next train departs so I make my way to a corner shop for some snacks and a drink. It's then back to the station to catch 313203 to Bognor Regis. A 20 minute fester is had here so I go and explore, quickly concluding there really isn't much to do - I must have set off in the wrong direction.

It's back onto 313203, this time to Barnham where a swift dash across the platform puts me on 377135. I notice there's a service just a few minutes behind us, so I bail at Bosham, and pick up 313206 the rest of the way to Portsmouth and Southsea.

I have a good time catching up with my mates at a fine sea side pub before heading to my digs in Fratton, with 313213 doing the honours.

Nothing much to report on the return journey. It was 377423 from Portsmouth Harbour to Horsham, where we attached to 377432 to take us the rest of the way to Clapham Junction. It was a transfer here to 377708 along the West London Line and up to Milton Keynes Central, before 350128 took me the rest of the way. The Southern and London Midland only advance tickets put you on long journeys, but for £7.25 it's an absolute bargain so I'm not complaining!

Overall stats for the whole trip:

Total mileage: 577m51ch
Total winners for haulage: 21
Total new shacks: 12
Total cost: £33.05

I've got no more travels in the pipeline now until early July, where a trip to Chester with six hours between commitments lends itself nicely to a Cheshire Day Ranger, and a three day trip to London should provide at least one day's excitement with a zones 1-6 travelcard. :D

Hang on a minute. I've just realised I've still got oine Northern Day Ranger left which has to be used up this week! *starts hasty trip planning*

Nice work with 377472 and 377474, both of the speed run sets within three moves. I haven't seen them for a while and I commute on 377s every day.

I had Southern 377s on a Thameslink service on my last DaySave, well didn't get on of course but I too was confused!

Bognor Regis, which way did you come out of the station, left or right? The beach is about 15 minutes walk away, the shops about 8 minutes, but if you turn right you won't see much in Bognor! It's not that exciting a town really, but it does have stuff to do!

You certainly had a good time there and it was the usual excellent read! At least you've made a good start on the extensive Southern network, surprised you didn't do Seaford whilst down that way though. Bargain fare for the way home there, that's for sure!

I only got on because platform staff assured me if was ok, otherwise I would have played it safe. In guessing the confusion will stop when ask the franchises are merged next month!

Seaford was on the radar but I was due to meet friends for a pint in Portsmouth so had to drop out in the end. Yes the Southern and London Midland advances are great value.. . Just be sure to stock up on supplies, it's a long journey!
