If you could decide what train services ran in the UK - where they started and finished, what rolling stock was used, how frequent and what stations they called it, what services would you wish to have?

Here are some of mine:

Preston to Carlisle on the WCML, calling at all stops along the way - hourly/bi-hourly service - Class 142 Pacer

Lancaster to Windermere, calling at all stops - hourly service - Class 142 Pacer

London to Edinburgh, calling at all major stops - hourly service - Cross Country Class 220/221 5 coach voyager

Colne to Blackpool South, calling at all stops (as it used to be!) - hourly service - Class 142/150/156, Class 142+150/153/156 at weekends

Colne to Manchester Piccadilly via Blackburn - Class 142/150/156 - As the line between Burnley Barracks and Colne is only single track, this could be achieved by either installing a passing loop at Brierfield or running the Manchester train only as far as Nelson while the Blackpool train is waiting at Colne. Or have a four carriage train split at Blackburn.

Preston to Liverpool via Ormskirk - Class 142/150/156 - calling at most stops - this could be achieved by removing the buffers at Ormskirk

Re-open Colne to Skipton line and have a Colne to Leeds service - Class 142/144/150/153/156, calling at Colne, Foulridge, Earby, Skipton, Keighley, Bradford, Shipley and Leeds - hourly/bi-hourly service

Replace the current Blackpool North to York service (currently run by 3 coach 195’s) with a Cross Country 4 coach 220/221 voyager and extend to Newcastle - hourly service - also run non-stop on ECML between Leeds and York

Penzance to London Paddington in a class 142/143/153 calling at all stops! Ultra cheap fares. Runs once or twice a day.

London Kings Cross to Edinburgh in a class 142 Pacer, calling at all stops! Ultra cheap fares. Runs once or twice a day.

Exeter to Weymouth via Southampton - Class 143 + Class 150 - calling at all stops - hourly service

York to Grantham via Doncaster calling at all stops - Class 144 Pacer - hourly service

Southampton Airport to Bournemouth - Class 143 Pacer - hourly service

Birmingham New Street to Northampton - Double class 150 or class 319 - calling at all stops - hourly service

Birmingham New Street to London via Northampton - Cross Country 4 coach Class 220/221 Voyager - calling at major stops - hourly service

Birmingham New Street to Milton Keynes - Double class 150 or class 319 - calling at most stops - hourly service

Birmingham New Street to Nottingham calling at most stops - Class 150 - half hourly service

Re-open Rawtenstall to Heywood line and have an hourly Rawtenstall to Manchester Victoria service - class 142/150/156

Yes I included a lot of pacer services… I miss them so much!

How about a London to Leeds train hauled by a Black Five locomotive that terminates short in the Hatfield Tunnel due to inclement weather :)

London Euston to London Kings Cross via Preston, Edinburgh Waverley and York on a class 800. A journey of around 10 hours, that would only take you a few hundred metres!

Hourly London (Euston or Marylebone) to pwllheli & Aberystwyth alternating between the 2.
With a pwllheli to Aberystwyth on the opposite hours.

London journeys Class 175 - (longer 5 car version) reason I seem to remember very good legroom & working aircon, although it’s been a number of years since I’ve been on one.

Pwllheli - to Aber journeys standard 2/3 car 175

Three times a day Seaford (East Sussex) - Birmingham New Street using class 378 stopping at Newhaven Town, Lewes, Haywards Heath, Gatwick Airport, East Croydon, Clapham Junction, Watford Junction, Milton Keynes Central, Northampton, Rugby, Coventry, Birmingham International and Birmingham New Street. If the service is extended further than Birmingham New Street, then it will need a 4 car Tri-mode train.

Also three times day Portsmouth Harbour to Wolverhampton calling Portsmouth and Southsea, Fratton, Havant, Petersfield, Guildford, Wokingham, Reading, Oxford, Banbury, Leamingstop Spa, Solihull, Birmingham New Street and then Wolverhampton. This service should be done with a Tri-mode train that has no more than 4 carriages.

Direct service from Weston-super-Mare to Wick, using a HST.
No intermediate station stops, so only available to someone making an end to end journey.
I suspect I would have a peaceful trip.

Liverpool Street - Cambridge North service extended to Peterborough via Ely (same stock, hourly)
CrossCountry Birmingham-Stansted transferred to EMR (still turbos but more seating/carriages), All stops from Birmingham to Leicester removed except Nuneaton (BHM-LEI stopper becomes half hourly), March and Audley End stops (+ the infrequent Whittlesea/Manea) also removed. Peterborough-Ipswich extended to Colchester all day, same stopping pattern.
Cambridgeshire Guided Busway replaced with Parry People Movers and Azumas (Both running simultaneously, total luck which one you get)

Swansea/Cardiff to Glasgow/Edinburgh via Gloucester
micro sleepers using somthing like a 769 or 755 for services like London to Camarthen/Birmingham/Newcastle etc
and finally nightstar:
part 1: Edinburgh to Kensington Olympia with both a Paris and Amsterdam portion with one of the 2 extending to glasgow alternating each day, stopping at newcastle, york, leeds and manchester picadilly via electrified transpenine north
part 2: Swansea to Kensington Olympia to Amsterdam stopping at Cardiff and Bristol Parkway
part 3: alternates between Plymouth/Holyhead and Norwich to Paris
all joined at Kensington Olympia then take classic route to tunnel then splits to Amsterdam/Paris portions at Lille-Flanders
tranction UK side would be class 93's till Kensington Olympia where either 92's or 2x66/67/68's would take over, at dollands a tunnel equiped SNCF traxx or vectron would take over so no need to loco swap again on europe side
Customs and security done on board via a customs carriage and waiting room carriage(s) that stays UK side when removed at Kensington Olympia

Sunday: Edinburgh/Swansea to Amsterdam, Holyhead/Glasgow to Paris
Monday: Glasgow/Swansea to Amsterdam, Plymouth/Edinburgh to Paris
Tuesday: Edinburgh/Swansea to Amsterdam, Norwich/Glasgow to Paris
Wednesday: Glasgow/Swansea to Amsterdam, Holyhead/Edinburgh to Paris
Thursday: Edinburgh/Swansea to Amsterdam, Plymouth/Glasgow to Paris
Friday: Glasgow/Swansea to Amsterdam, Norwich/Edinburgh to Paris
Saturday: no service

Interesting idea. Might be the first of quite a few posts for me.

If we were allowed to restore and open stations, I'd restore a platform at Barnstaple and create a Barnstaple to Taunton service via Minehead. It will be an hourly service operated by class 150 (preferably not 150249, I don't like Taunton )

Manchester Piccadilly, Crewe, Birmingham New Street, Stratford International, Lille-Europe, Bruxelles-Midi, Liège-Guillemins, Aachen Hbf, Köln Hbf, Siegburg/Bonn, Frankfurt am Main Flughafen (sehr-)Fernbahnhof, Frankfurt am Main Hbf, Mannheim Hbf, Karlsruhe Hbf, Stuttgart Hbf, Ulm Hbf, Augsburg Hbf, München-Pasing, München Ost, Salzburg Hbf, Linz Hbf, St Pölten Hbf, Wien Westbahnhof.

I don't think you'd even have to reverse! If we can get the lack of connectivity between HS2 and HS1 sorted, that is... and the passport controls... and the electrification and signalling systems... and who on earth would staff it...

Normally to be operated by a Deutsche Bahn ICE3-neo. If one is unavailable, TfGM to step up and provide a lash-up of six Metrolink M5000s, with the corresponding set in the other direction swapped at Köln for six K5000s back to Manchester to avoid too many units ending up in the wrong place.

Frankfurt am Main Hbf is a terminus station for long distance trains as is (currently) Stuttgart Hbf, although both have through S-bahn underground stations. So you'd have two reversals.

Thanks - I'd forgotten about Frankfurt, and I think in my head sort of assumed that Stuttgart21 must finally be done by now, though a quick Google confirms it is indeed not..

Or how about a GWR 143 for a more retro feel? Really liked the 143 in GWR livery.

Another good route idea is to extend the Blackpool North to York service to Scarborough.

Also we need more non-stop servies to compete with air and coach travel.

Edinburgh to London, Aberdeen to London, London to Manchester etc.

Just to hear how long the automated announcements would be whilst still keeping it at least a tiny bit realistic, I'd go with a TFW service from Manchester Piccadilly to Aberystwyth, Pwllheli and Swansea via the Heart of Wales, calling at all stops between Crewe and Shrewsbury. Formed of two 158s coupled to a 153, with the 153 splitting off at Shrewsbury and the 158s then doing the regular Cambrian service. I reckon the train would already be at Wem by the time the announcement ends at Piccadilly lol. Make it an hourly service just for the hell of it, it'll upgrade the service for Wrenbury, Wem and Prees whilst also calling absolute mayhem on the HoW and Cambrian

If you want a serious answer out of me, I'd just go with Merseyrail's battery 777s replacing the Northern service on the Ellesmere Port - Helsby line. Keeps Merseyrail self-contained and gives Ince & Elton an actual usable service. Maybe allocate a unit to run as a shuttle between Hooton and Helsby, I reckon that journey takes somewhere close to half an hour so it could give the line an hourly service in each direction, which some people will argue is overkill due to the line's low usage, but I think the low usage is caused by the poor service rather than the other way round. The village of Elton has a population of over 3,500, more than places on Merseyrail such as Hooton, Port Sunlight and Capenhurst, all of which have a lower population than Elton yet either a half hourly or quarter hourly service

I think I would also add in a once a day Brighton - Holyhead service calling at Haywards Heath, Gatwick Airport, East Croydon, Clapham Junction, Watford Junction, Milton Keynes Central, Northampton, Rugby, Coventry, Birmingham International and Birmingham New Street where the trains would be joined by another service from Bournemouth and then go on to Wolverhampton, Stafford, Crewe, Chester, Rhyl, Llandudno Junction to Holyhead.

ScotRail to take over all of TPE's paths from Edinburgh to Newcastle and extend services from Aberdeen/Inverness in their place or with new applied paths, which captures the peak time Scottish market down the ECML, and adds competition to the LNER monopolisation of direct cross border services north of Edinburgh and potentially generates revenue to reduce cross-subsidies of other services.

In the realms of fiction, I'll throw a once daily return summer special from Glasgow Central to Blackpool North into the mix, and also once daily from Aberdeen. The Scottish market really is there for the taking with this one.

That could offer a cheaper parallel alternative, albeit slower, compared with using LNER, Hull Trains or Grand Central.
With one change at Doncaster, it'll be much quicker travelling between Leeds and Lincoln rather than the current long but direct route via Barnsley and Sheffield.

Leicester to London Kings Cross via Syston, Melton Mowbray, Oakham, Stamford, Peterbrough, Huntingdon, St Neots, Biggleswade & Stevenage.

Could allow the Class 387's from GN PBO-KGX peak extras to transfer to Southern for use on the Brighton Mainline.

And could alongside Thameslink provide a third, more frequent budget London - Yorkshire option similarly to the WMT / TfW London - Manchester fares.

M1-A1 rail service which follows that corridor from London Euston upto Newcastle, with some slight diversions to pick-up conurbations along the corridor, stopping at all of the cities and major towns along the route, providing a direct rail service connecting all of the major towns and cities along the North-South axis.
