The former Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) has now been replaced by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). The transfer of records and procedures is ongoing - the old CRB forms are still being used.

There have been 2 radical changes, one, following the Soham murders, increased the scope of a disclosure, the second, following the Government's review of the CRB scheme.

Rather than type an attempt at an answer to your question, can I refer you to another thread in which I did cover much of this ground? Here: CRB checks (now Disclosure and Barring Service)

I'm unable to agree with some of the earlier posts in this thread, specifically those by Class_317There are reasons, and Chief Constable considering a conviction for a (car) driving offence while studying a request in respect of an applicant for a (train) driving position might, just might, consider that the 2 have some relevance to each other; but please note the filtering procedures which will be applied when considering a request.

Would a basic disclosure still be the same though?

The 'filtering' procedures that I referred to are intended to ensure that a disclosure is only made if both the historic conviction or incident was relevant to the current search, AND if the reason for the current search is relevant to the historic conviction or incident.

The intention is to prevent employment opportunities being lost due to irrelevant entries in a person's history, which has been happening too often.

Can train guards have tattoos on show by any chance

Ideally no, if you have them on your arms then you should wear a long sleeve shirt to cover them, if you have them on your hands or neck etc where they cannot easily be covered then you probably wont be considered although there are always exceptions.

Image is quite important.

With all due respect TOCs only request a "BASIC" disclosure (under the CRB system) what this means is that "spent convictions" such as cautions and time lapsed (2-5 year old) convictions will not show up on one of these... You are confusing a "basic" disclosure with a "standard" disclosure.

I cannot comment on the new DBS system as my post was made when the CRB system was still in force.
