sounds similar to a story about an A2 at Durham in 1994 that Google will reveal, similar cause or just chinese whisper syndrome?
There was the EE Type 4 that swallowed the Fat Controller's hat on the Isle of Sodor one time..
I remember reading about a HST test run from Newcastle to Kings Cross non stop (possibly the world record run) where the staff at Heaton were very carefully checking the power cars involved.
1 of them looked to have suffered a flashover and on investigating, found the remains of a golf ball.
The bit I remember most from reading that was 1 of the fitters saying: "I've no idea how it got there, but I've a feeling it was with a 7 iron."![]()
A story (which may or may not be true) that I've told here before of a Duchess approaching Euston. It seems that the regulator decided to jam wide open and the reverser would not budge. After doing an emergency stop on the train brakes, the fireman dropped the fire, but there was still sufficent steam to set the wheels spinning madly after burning out the brake blocks. Once they finally stopped rotating, a shunter picked up the coaches and took them to the platform, then went back to collect the Duchess, and she wouldn't budge. The spinning wheels had melted the piece of rail on which they turned, which had now solidified, so the engine was welded to the rails! They had to remove and replace the entire rail sections to get her moved.
I've heard a similar story with a Class 37 involved at Immingham. One such example coupled up to a heavy train (could have been Lindsey Oil Refinery, but can't remember exactly, somewhere around Immingham), tried to get it moving, ended sitting there spinning it's wheels for quite some time before moving. Once moving, train experiences a rough ride. Turns out there's 12 dents in the rails where the Class 37 was sat with it's wheels spinning, which had dug a few inches into the rails!
It should be remembered that any defect which might affect the safe running of a train is a legitimate reason to fail it (eg broken widscreen wiper, driver's seat not adjusting, cab heating not working, P.A. system on multiple units not working, etc)
