It's safe to say that Germany does not consider the pandemic over and that restrictions will increase as Winter approaches. Measures in discussion include more mandetory mask wearing, compulsory testing to gain access to venues regardless of vaccination status. Unfortunetly the German state has no ability to look at the situation in countries without any measures.

It's strange that Germany, which I've always considered a very pragmatic and middle of the road country in modern times (look at the way it didn't wish to rush to get involved in Middle Eastern wars, for example), wishes to possibly continue with hardline and severe restrictions (i.e. compulsory testing to access venues) this winter. One would think that the rational and measured approach typical of post-war German politics would be to consider Covid no longer a dangerous threat as we enter 2023 and thus consider mandatory testing over-the-top reactionary hyperbole.

The only reason I can think of is an excessive sense of guilt: "if compulsory testing saves just a few lives, it's worth doing".

Spain talking about more restrictions. I have a holiday in October not booked yet but I think the idea of more restrictions would put me off travelling. Seems no certainty restrictions can return but no exit strategy? Still can’t even get into Holland without a vaccine? Are we going to see restrictions coming on and off like a tap or are we actually going to see the back of this pandemic?

We appear to be seeing the fallout of a massive failure of public health requirements/advice/messaging.

We're now in a very weird state where pretty much everything we were told to do and pretty much everything we were told would work, despite never having worked before and in most cases actively been advised against, has been seen to miserably fail at actually doing anything much at all, and in fact has probably made things worse. And most people seem to have noticed this by now.

In response, some appear to be pushing to try many of the same things again, in the vague hope that for some reason they will work better this time around.

Meanwhile, if you look at somewhere like Sweden where they followed a fairly conventional approach, they seem to be getting along very nicely.

Some countries don't understand that the "end" means reaching endemic equilibrium and think that imposing restrictions will avoid (rather than delay) infections.

It may be a while before Spain, Italy, Germany etc realise the error of their ways.

I recommend avoiding these countries for now, and visiting more sensible countries in the meantime.

If you look at epidemic curves and outcomes for Sweden and Germany they are almost exactly the same.

In terms of material benefit, they might as well tell people to wear stickers / badges on transport saying "Be nice". In fact, that would have a much more positive outcome.

People who feel lonely or isolated may normally look forward to taking transport as an opportunity to communicate with others. However, dystopian masks send out a message of "stay away from me". Also they take away non-verbal cues, such as a smile, which is often an indication that "You are welcome to talk to me."

In addition, and I am surprised this hasn't been picked up on more, but coming from a "non-mask" country, Sweden, I have found when visiting "mask countries" I often have difficulty hearing what people say as the mask makes it sounds as if they are mumbling.

As of today Brittany Ferries have stated mask wearing will be required on all their ships.

Mask-wearing has been reinstated on board our ships

From Monday, 4 July, to ensure the continued safety of our passengers and our crew, we are requesting all passengers, unless exempt - older than six years old - to wear a mask while on board in public areas (other than when seated to eat or drink).

Not that I go on ferries much but that'll be one company I avoid.

I've generally had an ambivalent attitude towards masks, but at this (very) late stage, in the middle of summer two-and-a-half years after this all began, it seems an unnecessary precaution at this late stage. It represents little willingness to see an end to this crisis which has been prolonged past its sell-by date of sometime in 2021.

Infinitely worse is Germany's apparent talk of compulsory tests to get into venues. Do its leaders not actually understand that this will cause significant damage to the hospitality sector, which will already be suffering due to people having less money to spend, due to high fuel prices, due to... erm... the German government's previous monumentally imbecilic decision to source gas from the likes of Putin?

As i read that, it is just a request and so optional?
Either way, just claim an exemption.

I would agree with your assessment. Since mask wearing on public transport is optional in the UK and France (although it is still compulsory in Spain) I suspect they have no legal basis.

This does strike me as one of the most stupid rules around. If you are on a ship for a few hours you will probably visit your cabin (if you have one), a restaurant and a bar - none of which require a mask. However should you wish to sit on the deck you do!

We're booked for Spain in October but if restrictions start coming back then I may consider moving it to next year.

Ironically parts of Spain (the south, such as Andalusia, at any rate) are perhaps best visited in the cooler months. If the government there aren't careful, and depending on how severe the restrictions are, they will drive away the winter tourists - of which there are many (I know from experience).

But I think there is a good chance that, as winter approaches, and other economic issues start to bite, they will reconsider whether restrictions are really such a good idea.

Indeed, as many people will do this time of year.

According to Sherpa, from tomorrow, it will be possible to visit Australia without presenting a COVID Vaccine certificate or negative test, which I'm sure will please plenty of people.

I'm presently in Stuttgart.

So far, and apart from pretty much everyone (but not quite all) wearing masks on public transport, it's all very much as back in the UK.

And mask wearing is very much restricted by most to actually being on the transport. Most people remain maskless on platforms, even in busy underground S and U-bahn stations, and only put them on as the doors open, whipping them off again as soon as they exit. It's roughly 60/40 between FP2 and the regular masks.

Everyone wore masks on the Eurowings flight out, but not on the airbridge or airport building on arrival.

Slightly off topic, but nice to see up-to-date paper route maps and timetables freely available for bus, tram, U-bahn, S-bahn and regional DBB services. For the latter, that's once you find the DBB information centre at the station. The old station hall is closed as part of the reconstruction and building of the new line to Ulm. It's a real mess.

More COVID bedwetting.

The Lib Dem MP Layla Moran really gets my goat. Not only is she COVID bedwetting, but she just has to get a dig in about Brexit as well

She said: 'Other countries could reintroduce restrictions on arrivals from Britain and transport companies, already in crisis from the Government's mishandling of Brexit and industrial action, are likely to see an increase in staff shortages with more people off sick with the virus and long Covid.'

I suppose if a load of "experts" and COVID bedwetters cancel their foreign holidays, it might ease some of the queues we are seeing at airports. So every cloud has a silver lining. :D

Is YOUR summer holiday in danger of being ruined by Covid? Cases soar in France, Greece, Italy and Spain... as one expert says he's already CANCELLED his break

  • Spain, France and Germany are logging a rise in infections, while cases in Caribbean hotspots creeping up
  • Travellers no longer need to prove they're Covid-free and destinations have ushered in post pandemic era
  • But some health chiefs have called for a return of masks and self-isolation is still required in some countries
Covid cases are on the rise in some of the UK's favourite holiday hotspots, raising concerns of yet more travel chaos for millions this summer.

Spain, France and Germany are all currently logging a rise in infections, while outbreaks are growing bigger in popular Caribbean islands.

Sunseekers no longer need to prove they're Covid-free and vaccinated to be allowed into many of the country's best-loved destinations, who have followed Britain's lead in ushering in the post-pandemic era.

Yet health chiefs on the continent — who are alarmed about the resurgence — have already called for a return of masks.

Experts told MailOnline travellers could easily face restrictions in their destination this summer, if officials feel the rise warrants action over the coming weeks. One revealed he had already cancelled his holiday break to Spain over concerns about rising cases, and was instead planning a camping trip within the UK.

Others warned Britain could be cut-off from international holidays if cases continue to surge. Lib Dem MP Layla Moran said that countries might feel the need to 'reintroduce restrictions on arrivals from Britain'.

Ms Moran told the Mirror that it is 'possible that holiday plans will be ruined due to rising Covid rates in the UK'.

She said: 'Other countries could reintroduce restrictions on arrivals from Britain and transport companies, already in crisis from the Government's mishandling of Brexit and industrial action, are likely to see an increase in staff shortages with more people off sick with the virus and long Covid.'

Professor Martin McKee, president at the British Medical Association (BMA), told MailOnline that holidaymakers face a summer of uncertainty.

He said: 'We can look at infection levels now but that doesn't tell us where they will be when we actually travel.

'Nor does it tell us whether it has hit the people who fly us to our destination or handle our bags.'

Professor McKee added: 'We're not out of the woods yet.'

However, Professor Paul Hunter, an infectious disease expert at the University of East Anglia, told MailOnline that discrepancies between how nations test means differences in Covid rates are difficult to compare.

But he said he doesn't expect nations — many of which are reliant on tourism, a sector which has been largely crippled by economically-damaging restrictions used during the pandemic — to bring in a swathe of curbs.

Professor Hunter said: 'I really don't which — if any — holiday destinations will change the rules. I doubt many holiday destination countries will make existing rules more restrictive.'

However, he noted that 'there is an issue about staffing of airports and airlines if many staff are testing positive and so off work'.

When cases soared to pandemic highs in April, thousands of airport workers took time off ill, fuelling chaotic scenes in Heathrow and Birmingham airports.

Outbreaks across Europe are being fuelled by Omicron sub-variants BA.4 and BA.5, which are thought to be even more infectious than the BA.2 strain that caused infections in the UK to spiral to a record 4.1million in April.

The two newer sub-strains have caused cases in England to more than double in the last month. Data from the Office for National Statistics show 1.8million people were infected in the week to June 24 — rising by a third in a week and marking the highest rate in two months.

Dr David Strain, a senior clinical lecturer at Exeter University, told MailOnline that uncertainty around whether restrictions will be brought in destinations, some nations requiring masks and the risk of catching Covid on the plane or on holiday will leave Britons weighing up whether jetting abroad is worth it.

He has already scrapped his villa holiday in Spain for a UK camping staycation over concerns about the virus would wreak havoc on his travels.

Dr Strain warned that around one in 20 people will be infected as they get on a flight and up to five in 20 could be carrying the virus when they land — which could scupper holiday plans.

He urged Britons to consider whether there will be Covid restriction when they arrive at their destination and questioned whether that is a holiday people really want.

I'm reading this just as my friend from Canada asks me quite innocently if the airports here are as messed up as they are there.

It isn't Brexit, it isn't Ukraine, it isn't even the COVID virus - all this mess is fully on the overreactive *response* to COVID.

Digs about Brexit are perfectly fine as far as I'm concerned ;)

... but not hyping up risks about Covid. It's unlikely (as the article says) that holiday destinations will actually introduce further restrictions - it would be disastrous for their economies. So I agree, irresponsible of her to distort the article in this way.

I hope the opposition parties - both Labour and Lib Dem - will realise that going on about Covid will harm their political chances, not help them. Many of us want both an end to Covid restrictions and an end to the Tories and Johnson - and a softening of Brexit too (though this isn't the place to discuss this). Labour and Lib Dems, take note now.

Currently in the New York at the moment.

Had the bizarre situation of a mask less 7 hour flight from Manchester but told to wear one at JFK!

You’re supposed to wear a mask on the Subway $50 fine apparently but mask wearing is about 50% with even the police not wearing them.

I've been to New York in July, the subway was pretty hot if I remember correctly. Thus, overall, in 2022, is mask-wearing on the subway in midsummer actually more of a health risk than a health benefit?

Cyprus has got masks back indoors.

My fear is rest of Europe follows restrictions and I have to cancel my holiday yet again. How long are they going to keep forcing these crazy measures?

I didn't think we were checking vaccine status on departure anymore, or perhaps it's different for the Netherlands
The Dutch border is at St Pancras, you effectively have your entry status checked on departing London.

There are 2 events I want to go to the Autumn/Winter
One in Dresden and one in Turin
However as both countries are no doubt going to insist on masks on public transport I am staying here and not spending my money

I returned from Canada /USA 3 weeks ago
Toronto Pearson airport had security guards telling one to mask up and had signs telling you not to enter if you were not flying ( Although I saw a chap simply tell them he did not have one and they did nothing)
The Lounge was not enforcing anything fortunatly

Even stranger was the border at Niagiara
There was an official sign stating that you needed to produce a negative test and a quarantine plan even though they had been abolished a month before
The imigration office shouted to get back behind the yellow line
In a "you could not make this up" he did not ask us to lower our masks at all so was lettiong masked people into Canada

On the other hand USA was pretty much mask nonsense free except for
Taxi at Chicago O'Hare told me to wear a mask. I declined and took the next in line who did not care
one bus driver who told me to wear one
I sat in the back corner of the bus in his blind spot and wanted to comply but my mask somehow fell off !

I’m flying back out of Atlanta in a couple of weeks so no idea.

However none of the crew were masked outbound.
I very much doubt it since the supreme court stopped the mask mandate

At Toronto when we boarded the plane everyone had masks on and did not take them off initially ( It is I think still obligatory on inbound flights fortunatly we came in via USA Land border)
A splendid British Airways posh sounding captain made an amusing anouncement
"Ladies and gentlemen the doors are now closed. This means that we are under british jurisdiction and therefore you do not need to wear masks"
The Cabin manager wore his for another couple of hours but then discarded it as he probably did not want to be the only masked person

The trains are okay because they all have air con but the underground stations are very hot.

I get the feeling that some of these countries are just never going to completely let go of this mandatory mask wearing nonsense. They may well scrap the restrictions/laws for a few months(or however long). But then as soon as cases rise again(even if cases had fallen to a very low level anyway!) they then go and bring the restrictions back in again! How much longer are they going to continue like this, into 2023, 2024, 2025, beyond then??!! Absolutely ridiculous. They need to scrap these silly restrictions/laws once and for all and move on from this!

Germany is one of my favourite countries to goto. Not been since early 2020 now. But whilst they're still keeping up their mandatory mask wearing nonsense, I sadly have no plans to return there.

Just returned from a short trip to Belgium by Eurostar. Big queues at St P as 2 trains due out close together. Security person asking destination, if the answer was 'Paris' show vaccination, if Brussels then straight through, but no actual checking of tickets.
Screens on the train still saying that it was mandatory to wear a mask. Probably about 1 in 20 masked, mostly with FFP2. Very little mask wearing in Brussels.

I was in NY in April/May, travelling with BA. As with nedchester, there was no mask required until we got to JFK and we found the same on the subway with not everyone complying. No masks required on the train from NY to Washington DC either. We returned through NY Newark on 9th May and the only time we had to put masks on was going through security.
