COVID impact on TV

One of the contestants on Strictly Come Dancing has recently tested positive for COVID:

Strictly Come Dancing contestant HRVY has revealed he has tested positive for coronavirus, 10 days before the launch show is due to be filmed.

As it stands, he has enough time between now and the launch show to self-isolate so I doubt any issues but this raises the question - should TV productions of this scale be going ahead at the moment. To no surprise, there are some people angry over the show being allowed to go ahead and saying that it would be the right thing to cancel it rather than edit it around COVID restrictions. And I imagine that this guy (who is only 21 so very low risk) didn't even catch it on the set.

I disagree - as long as these shows adhere to the guidelines and don't cast anyone at risk, what's the issue with them going ahead? People who work in TV (both on and off screen) need paid their wages, many have taken a financial hit as well recently. If we applied the same attitude to everything else in all of this, we'd still be in a full lockdown.

Yes - that is true and I believe went well. I don't see why people are so opposed to TV going on with some tweaks. Their views on things are so out of touch with reality.

Indeed the show must go on!

And many of these folks who want no shows this year are probably under the delusion that a vaccine will completely eradicate COVID.

It's the This Morning theme tune that gets me - and I don't even watch TV! I hear it every morning, 10am, blasting from next door's living room (who insist on keeping their windows wide open all morning whilst the TV is blaring).

No - sorry - they insist on having their windows wide open and their TV blasting in the morning. Although I assume it's because our houses are east facing and the sun beats in until around 11am (yes, even in Scotland!)

I don't usually shut any of the windows until mid October in Scotland. Mind you, I don't watch This Morning.

Bake-Off did seem to go to a lot of effort to stay Covid secure and still not compromise on the quality and style, which was good. Strictly have made a lot of changes, keeping the dancers in lockdown throughout the preparation stages and making the couples move out of home throughout the production so that they can bubble. Its massive overkill, but if it's the only way they can make something normal then it's worth it.

It's important that this stuff goes ahead, partly to keep people who enjoy that stuff sane, and partly because otherwise the whole network of freelancers and staff who work on the shows would otherwise be facing destitution. We're losing staff, skills and even equipment which is being sold abroad. If we don't make programmes now then we won't be able to make them even when this idiocy finally comes to an end.
