Coventry to Edinburgh via ECML?

I’ve a work meeting in Coventry followed a day later by a (personal) trip to London. My employer will pay for an off-peak return from Edinburgh to Coventry. The outbound journey is obviously straightforward and I’ll need to buy my own ticket from Coventry to London.

For the return trip it would obviously be better to return via the East Coast main line than via Coventry. Routing “via London” is sadly not valid for the off peak return. So far it looks like I’d need to buy my own ticket to York and then use the return portion of the off-peak return for the rest of the journey. Are there any other ways of doing it where the off peak return will be valid between London and York?

Off Peak Returns from Edinburgh to Coventry are, I believe, only issued route "Any Permitted".

So, does this allow travel both via Carlisle (WCML) and via York (ECML)?

If the latter, how far South along the ECML can the OP go, before having to head over towards Coventry.

Which may determine available routes for the return trip, originating in London.

A ticket from London to Doncaster would suffice, providing the train calls at Donny.

Only half of the LNER trains do so, with the other having first stop York, and the Lumo trains first set down Newcastle.

Therefore you may need to buy a ticket to York or Newcastle if the train you are doing to board is one of those trains.
