Mum wants to go from Sunday and return Monday after 11:00- via Bristol if possible want her to avoid a turbo star!

No railcards, just standard adult price- she's happy to split tickets as she's done it before, any advice?

A straight split at Cheltenham into two Off-Peak Returns saves £8.50 (£47.50 compared to £56).

Bromsgrove is closed on the sunday, £47.50 seems like a lot to spend time on a bus, would she be better off getting a full fare ticket and then going via reading?

Leamington Spa - Didcot - Swindon - Bristol - Newport - Gloucester - Worcester

You'd still need Coventry - LMS and Newport - Cardiff singles to complete this journey.

It might be construed as taking the p***, but that's another story.

I am not quite sure if you can go via Reading on this ticket, easement 82 is poorly phrased:

"Journeys via Swindon and Didcot or via Swindon to Didcot and routed Not London may double back between Reading and Didcot. This easements [sic]
applies in both directions."

Is this

(a) "Journeys via Swindon and Didcot and routed Not London"
and "Journeys via Swindon to Didcot and routed Not London"

OR

(b) "Journeys via Swindon and Didcot"
and "Journeys via Swindon to Didcot and routed Not London"

Might be appropriate for the more experienced with the Routeing Guide.

The OP needs to consider whether this is suitable for his mother. Not going to be a hassle-free journey.

Weirdly the XC ticket app will only sell me a 1st return from Newport to CDF at £10.10- making two singles cheaper.

May be best getting the full fare ticket, especially If it's valid via RDG.

If your mum is eligible the return journey can be done from Birmingham International to Cardiff via Shrewsbury on an ATW Club 55 ticket for £17/£19 plus £3 return from Coventry to Birmingham Intl. No bus needed and flexible travel times.

Also would via hereford be possible? There are still advanced returns available for the monday so perhaps with a WM rover?

No, sorry. It isn't always possible to get an itinerary, sometimes because it is never intended to be valid that way.

You'll have to decide whether the saving is worth the potential hassle and embarrassment of being involved in an argument.
