Coupling a 170 and 153

I am interested in running a bachmann 170 with a 153, how do you think i should couple the units?

you would probably have to disable one of them to make it work due to differing gear ratios, but otherwise I would just use the supplied tension lock couplings

Have a look for Kadee (sp?) couplers, they alway seem popular.

If you have DCC you could run them both together without the need of having to disable one of them.

Yh they are both DCC, i do have some Kadee's... I just thought they didn't look right, however they are far better than the hornby or bachmann ones.

I haven't got a 170 ready yet, but I do have 158s and 153s with Kadees. I used #46 couplers because the longer shaft can be fitted further back for tighter curves (upto second radius - but this may vary for a 170), but I haven't run the 153 and 158 together yet. Two 158s together is fine and a 153 and 156 combination seems fine also.

Being a representation of a buckeye coupler, it isn't accurate for either unit (IIRC), but IMO it's the best option for a budget modeller. And once you have fitted the Kadee to the 153 you can stick the deflector to the chassis for a more realistic look.

this seems interesting, What will the easiest solution be to mix and match my forthcoming Class 150 (Bachmann) with my 158 (Bachmann) and hopefully 153 (Hornby)

It is quite simple to equip the 158, 156 and 153 units with chassis mounted Kadees like the #46. I don't have a 150 to equip yet though, so you're on your own there!

If you have gentler curves than mine, you may find Kadee #5 couplers are better suited to your needs. The 150's NEM pockets might suit the NEM mounted Kadee couplings, but I have no experience of these.
