Could TPE ditch the Mk5 sets?

Not if the locomotive goes in the middle of two sets - 755 style without the walk through - very speculative though and probably too long. They clearly won't work with a 73 in any case being somewhat more advanced.

My only thought was that if it was 73/9's being used, but yes the MK5 sets would be somewhat more advanced.

Why is the noise from the 68s considered such a problem, when I'm not aware of similar levels of complaint about the Chiltern mainline ones?

Actually there were comments about the noise of 68s at Marylebone. There was a thread on the subject started by an interested local iirc.

I had a similar thought as well. The Chiltern 68s pull six Mk 3s + DVT, and the MK5s are supposed to be quite a bit shorter - so not much extra load. I also read somewhere here that 2 Nova 3s were coupled, for a 10 car service. So it wasn't too long for somewhere, at least. And I hadn't realised that a single Class 68 has a huge amount of tractive force - 73k lbft vs. 43k max for a 91 and 14k for a 43...monstrous.

The APT followed exactly that format: no walk through between 2 leccy power cars

There has never been an incident where 2 68/mk5 sets coupled together in service. It was an allocating error on Realtime Trains which confused some people
