Could there be a covered walkway between Cardiff Central station and the tram stop?

Maybe I’m stupid but it seems a bit of an oversight to not put in a covered walkway between the new tram station and central when you are redoing the south entrance with how much it rains in Cardiff assume tram station is going be covered at least. its not a big distance between south entrance and tram station surely a covered path would of been fairly easy.

It would be nice to see a covered walkway, but I suspect there may be practical reasons it might not be included, likely most importantly for access both to the ramp up the railway for rail maintenance vehicles, and to the station itself for general maintenance. I am not sure there is enough clearance on the other side of the tram stop for this.

Regardless have we actually seen a plan for this area where the car park currently is? I don't believe so. It is not in the Crossrail Phase 1 application, and it also isn't in the Listed Building Consent for Cardiff Central, so I don't really see how we can say if there is or isn't one.

I think it's a shame there isn't a covered walkway between Cardiff Central and the new bus interchange. OK, the buildings aren't too far apart, but in a heavy downpour, it can only take a few seconds for you and your luggage to get very damp!

Cardiff planners seem to believe that South Wales is a sunny oasis. This is why no one needs to get to the airport to fly to the sun as well.

The current south side of Cardiff Central works well, you can pick up and drop off near the entrance. The new design removes all of that too.

I like what they have done with the north side of the station, but do agree it is a long gap in the rain to either the bus station, the Tesco or Pret.

I do think this does reflect that not everyone is going to the same place. It just isn't feasible to have a covered walkway everywhere. The most likely answer to why not is likely just they don't want to pay to build and maintain them.

In some of the earlier 'Metro Central' scheme proposals there were some grand covered canopies both to the south (connecting to Crosslink, MSCP & Coach Station) and to the north (connecting to Bus interchange.

Neither of these canopies are included in current plans, but could both be added later for relativley small cost.

In the case of the north it could be added to east end of Northern building, but would need some some careful architectural consideration to blend in with the listed frontage.

But while the south building is not listed it is more difficult to see how a canopy could be incorporated to blend in with the collonade design. I think this opportunity may have been lost....
