Could EMR intercity and XC be combined?

EMR intercity - As bad as xc? Discuss. The trains are crowded, far to short and getting quite tatty yet EMR seem to escape the criticism fired at XC for the same things. How come? Today I have to use EMR to get to Nottingham and the trains are rammed packed

In the days of INTERCITY sectorisation, MML and XC were one Train Operating Unit. They were split into shadow TOCs for privatisation. Maybe adding intercity MML back to intercity XC services in the future will be the way forwards?

Isn’t CrossCountry supposed to avoid London? I think EMR Intercity and CrossCountry should be separate brands, even if GBR means they are more connected more than currently.

I'd rather GBR focuses on better integration in terms of connections and passenger experience as in the likes of Switzerland, where 20 odd TOCs all connect into and out of each other and also with busses/trams/metros/ferries in a fairly seamless fashion and with simple, common ticketing. As someone says, the railways need to be boringly reliable.

CrossCountry historically used to run through London up until 2011 I think to enable the paths to be handed over to Crossrail.

Paddington was dropped in 2003. Brighton stopped in 2008. Not related to Crossrail.
