Running the Sleepers via the ECML is a well rehearsed alternative that works well and has been successfully used over many years. As the only locos than can power the trains are the 92s and 73/9s, of which, as PG says above, the 92s are all that can work a full length formation of 16 coaches, no viable alternative options exist. It is ECML or don't run.

We'll have to wait for the 99/4s to take over, then they might divert over the S&C...

No need for that just put two class 60s, the loco out of Rylstone quarry, about half a dozen 73s and the ninky nonk from In the Night Garden on the front of the 92 at Skipton. Then wait for the photographers to come out when it still doesn’t make it up Ais Gill. Simple.

Can a class 73 go in the middle of the formation so you have each 73 only providing hotel power to the normal half rake?

Unsure but can see an issue as the ETH cables would have to only be linked to one half, whilst the train wires/TMS cables working the whole of the train. Your next problem is likely to be length of train.

But the bigger question is why? Feel like this is a solution looking for a problem...

And whilst you're at we can send the southbound lowlander via the Cumbrian coast, pop the northbound highlander via the MML and the other lowlander can divert to Bristol...

Meanwhile, back in reality, the current service plan works fairly well.

Where are all these 73/9 coming from?? There are only 6 of them and a minimum of 3 are needed every night for the beyond Edinburgh portions.

Unless you're one of the (admittedly small) number of passengers needing Crewe, Preston or Carlisle.
...and from December Birmingham International, but the reality is you just choose another date, or way, to travel.

I have a feeling only the 73/9s can provide Electric Train Supply on both diesel and third rail, with the other 73 subclasses being limited to just on third rail.
Is there a source for this? I haven’t heard about any Dellner couplings for any of the 99s.
Rail confirmed they will go on the Caledonian Sleeper.

Correct. A 73/0 can heat on diesel but not haul and heat on diesel. A 73/1 (or /2) cannot heat at all on diesel.
