Could a REM style system work for Glasgow?

The Montreal REM (Réseau Express Metropolitan or Regional Express Metro) is interesting as it seems to blur the line between light rail, high capacity metro/heavy rail. Could a system like this work for Glasgow as a part of the Clyde Metro?

From having taken it a couple of times, it's definitively closer to a metro style system (frequency is comparable to the existing metro, and the REM stations connect directly - although you have to pass the ticket barrier again - to three out of four of the existing lines); the only heavy rail element really seems to be the distance (everything in North America is further apart, what do you want me to say!) and the physical tracks themselves.
