With modern door seals, is there really much point to intercity door spacings any more as opposed to the "commuter" ones at thirds with double leaf doors?

The usual problem cited is the draught when the doors open rather than poor seals. A 'long tube' of seating usually feels more like a long distance train than multiple small spaces but perhaps that is because of the way the spaces are configured.

Which is ironic, as if this Forum had existed maybe 40 years ago people would have been mourning the loss of compartment stock! :)

Personally I quite like the way you get two smaller saloons in a FLIRT, less noise etc.
