Have managed to thoroughly confuse myself with my options here...
I need to travel on the 5th May (Sunday) to Shepherd's Bush (time of arrival not especially important, provided I'm there by around 5pm), returning either after 11pm or Monday morning.

What is my best option?
Is it a weekend Off-Peak Travelcard (Southern special) and an Off-Peak single on the Monday, or would it be cheaper to get a direct through ticket to SPB overground? (Do advances exist for this route?)
Travelling from Cosham, or Havant? (Petersfield not an option - no bus link on Sundays)

Any and all advice appreciated, and all options considered, even if it adds time to my journey.

Many thanks in advance.

That could be subjective and would be difficult to be sure of.

(Do advances exist for this route?)
No. I've had a look at this flow on brfares.com and there are no through Advance fares. Of course, you could buy Advance fares for part of the route and combine them with walk-on fares.

For example you could get an Advance ticket on Southern trains (via Horsham & East Croydon) to Clapham Junction. If you do this, Oyster PAYG is the cheapest way to get from Clapham Junction to Shepherd's Bush.

I dont think BR Fares is right in this instance. I think there are through advances from Cosham to Shepherds Bush available in 2 tiers of £7.50 and £10.
I suspect theyve not been released yet though for these dates.

Bedhampton/Havant - Redhill SVR is £24 (£15 for a CDR), and is valid as far on SWT (but not Southern) to Clapham Junction.

You could then take the Overground from CLJ to Shepherds Bush using Oyster for about £1.50 each way.

Soil, could you give me more details on easements and routeing etc. for this one? Would be very interested in using it, but would want to be certain in case of meeting conductor or RP en route.

I like it! Also appears Southerns website is allowing an online discount.

It is routed Via Barnham so not valid via Clapham Junction.

If a website is selling this ticket via Clapham Junction, then I suggest you stick rigidly to the itinerary this ticket is purchased against. Using other trains would leave you on dodgy grounds.

You are highly likely to have to explain yourself if checked on the SWT service to/from Clapham Junction.

Edit:

See below.

I reckon johnnycaches alarm bells will be ringing, if he has finished dealing with the Via barnham and HS1 issues!

The tickets I suggested are routed Any Permitted, please check your facts.

Any booking site will offer this option if you specify via Surbiton for example.

Seems to me that Southern undercut SWT on many tickets to CLJ on SWT, knowingly, I would say.

E.g for Southampton - Brighton there is a via Barnham Southern fare, which has an obvious route, and also a Not Via London fare, also set by Southern, which is cheaper than Southampton - CLJ set by SWT, even though the Not Via London BTN fare serves no purpose other than to permit travel via CLJ.

Something very odd is going on. I swear it was routed Via Barnham last time I looked.

Edit:

I see what's going on. If Southern owns the Any Permitted fare from Bedhampton then it indeed undercuts the SWT flow from Portsmouth, while both have the same routeing properties.

You will be alright. It is a reasonable route via Clapham Junction so you won't need to show anything. I doubt you will be challenged.

I think the Southampton to Brighton (not london) issues pre-date privatisation and may possibly be protected fares.
the via Barnham issues were not foreseen by the person introducing the fares and will be replaced by route Edenbridge/Hastings or similar.
Havant to redhill is probably more difficult as they seem to have reduced a protected any permittted fare

Many thanks for your swift and as always thorough input. Just waiting on the booking horizon to reach now, will aim for the Advance single on the Sunday, and use the Redhill - Bedhampton any permitted single (starting and finishing short) on the Monday. I have just realised the 6th is a Bank Holiday, am I right in assuming peak restrictions do not apply?

The single is an Anytime fare, so whether or not peak restrictions apply is irrelevant if you buy that ticket.

However generally speaking on bank holidays off-peak tickets are valid all day.

BTW, if you would prefer to travel to/from Cosham as well, you can try Cosham - Three Bridges, which is valid from all of Cosham, Bedhampton and Havant via Petersfield to Clapham Junction on SWT. Not valid via Winchester though.

i work for Southern

Here is an extract from brfares.com:

Flow Origin 5896 COSHAM
Flow Destination 9587 SHEPHERDS BUSH
Route 07777 AP SOUTHERN ONLY
Cross-London NO
Fare Setter NSC SOUTHERN

STANDARD CLASS
SCV ADVANCE SV ◊ STD SINGLE ADULT: £10.00 CHILD: £5.00
SBV ADVANCE SV ◊ STD SINGLE ADULT: £7.50 CHILD: £3.75
TKS CHILD FLTFARE S ◊ STD SINGLE CHILD: £1.00

Note the Clapham Junction to Shepherd's Bush leg would have to be on Southern as well as the Cosham Clapham Junction leg

If connections don't work well for that then better to buy an Advance to Clapham Junction which could be at the lowest price (SAV) of £5.00

we should have created a fare Havant Redhill route Barnham instead of price the any permitted flow so cheaply

enjoy it while you can

what we are trying to do is to create very affordable fares for journeys where they don't create undercutting opportunities for London fares

Forgive me bumping this thread back up, but I have a related query. I've discovered, that rather than having to stay overnight, I can travel from Shepherd's Bush back to Fratton via CLJ, using the 0050 off Waterloo (1P01), however National Rail is telling me that I would require 2 tickets for the journey.
I thought using a SCO (FTN - SPB) [Restriction BE] for both legs would cover me, as 1) The journey takes place on the same day; before 0430
and 2) Monday 6th is a Bank Holiday and therefore peak restrictions would not apply.

Can somebody shed light as to why I cannot validate the fare? I don't fancy running into problems and being stuck in London.

Peak restrictions indeed do not apply if your ticket is dated for the previous day. It is valid until 0429 in the morning. It wouldn't have mattered anyway as you say as the day after is a Bank Holiday anyway.

You can indeed use that ticket on the 0057 from Clapham Junction (0050 from Waterloo). I suspect that it is just an error on the NRE website. The train does however go non-stop between Woking and Fratton via Winchester.

As the SCO fare is routed +Any Permitted, you are also permitted to use London Underground to travel between Waterloo/Vauxhall and Shepherd's Bush LU.

That seems like a perfectly legitimate itinerary, maybe the booking engine doesn't like that it's after midnight but it's still valid. Anyway with the SCO you are not restricted to a particular train so the online itinerary doesn't need to match the train you intend to take!

Many thanks for you confirmation, again, technology can only go so far, especially with the British rail network.
