Please stop arguing.

I think I've said this before on this forum, but I remember my GCSE English class could tell you anything you wanted to know about the poems & books we read but when it came to spelling of certain words and usage of commas, apostrophes & paragraphs didn't know as much as you'd expect for an A or B grade student.

..true.... but you may find it rather difficult to get a good job which demands an acceptable grasp of the English language....

... and this is the voice of experience! If it wasn't for the efforts of my English teacher at school, I couldn't have achieved the postitions I did in commercial radio, the PR department of a major public transport operator, or my present position in public relations for clients in international shipping... I'm fortunate enough to get paid for reading and writing about global transport issues, including rail.

You may not think it's important to maintain standards, but hey, if you fancy a career in the media and transport press, why not practice your language skills here?

This is very true. When you get official information which is full of spelling mistakes or incorrect grammar, it makes you wary of the people writing it. Do I really want to trust a bank with my money if they can't even write a promotional pamphlet without making heinous mistakes? The only worse thing is if they had written said pamphlet in Comic Sans MS... :D

I agree not everything should be picked up on here - but when someone constantly posts stuff which takes ages to translate into comprehensible English, a little word in the ear that there is such thing as a spellchecker, or a dictionary, does no harm.

I do agree, I don't think showing off your ability to get straight A's is going to help you much, no body likes a show off.
You don't really need straight A's anyway I got a C in english language and I'm doing ok.. Literature I got an E but thats cos I despise Shakespeare and non-technical books ;)

They way you are battering on , some would think you do

Its preperation for the real world, without the added worries and responsibilities that hit you when you leave.

Surely the university will look at the relevant A Levels / associated courses , for example if your going to do chemistry / engineering they aint going to '' well he got A at A level in chemistry / engineering , but he sure buggered up in GCSE english and only got B ''

Most non-Oxbridge universites don't give a damn about your GCSEs, as long as you get your required Cs in Maths & English, and in most cases, 5 A*-Cs. However, if it comes to reading your Personal Statement (because of competition for a course or lower Level 3 grades in comparison); it's important it's well structured, and that includes line breaks (most Personal Statements are too long to miss out a whole line), commas, apostrophes, capital letters, spelling and the like; as well as showing you have a wide vocabulary (i.e. can use words other than interesting, enjoy and nice).

Thats my point , and if you know your spelling is rubbish you are going to spend time worrying on the important things in life such as that rather on a rail forum...

Fair points, but what with the demand for university places fare exceeding the supply, the selection process is becoming increasingly refined, so every good grade helps (thats if you want to have a career which requires qualifications).

I found English boring as well but I still got something out of it.

So Ramel, when does the launch of this revolutionary space shuttle designed by yourself take place? I mean you are a rocket scientist now, right? Certainly sounds like it.

Do you not find it hypocritical that one minuet you're telling me to get off my "high horse" yet here you cant stop trying to show off? I'm not trying to argue but what makes you think you will get all the way to university? It's a very hard path indeed. But yeah you know everything so you should know that by now.

But if you read what I really said, in which I actually said showing off about your ability of getting straight A's wont do you any favours. Not getting straight A's will do you no favours. But lets step back a bit here. Back to my original point, what do you think showing off your great ability's will achieve mm? Friends? Respect? 'Cos I can tell you now you wont get them. Again, you knowing everything and how you're always right. You should know this.

Now you need to calm down and stop bragging about these A grades till you at least get them.

Fair points, but what with the demand for university places fare exceeding the supply, the selection process is becoming increasingly refined, so every good grade helps (thats if you want to have a career which requires qualifications).

Seeing as you know everything, you're sure you are 100% right about that? 'Cos having family members been/going through university will tell you that it's not being more "refined". Numbers of students dropping out of University's are growing, thus more space is freed, in which the university can allow a wider range of students.

So Ramel, when does the launch of this revolutionary space shuttle designed by yourself take place? I mean you are a rocket scientist now, right? Certainly sounds like it.

I couldn't agree more.

GCSEs are utterley irrelevant they day you get the results !! As long as you get into Sixth/College with the result it matters not one bit to anyone else.

Same with A Levels the day you get into uni - don't matter in the slightest once you get there.

Don't worry chaps, the head of FGW can't spell complacency

Lets be clear No Corporate pressure was applied by us - that would have been wholly inappropriate. As I understand it the issue was one of in whose name and with what authority the Chairman of the RTB was speaking on that parliamentary occasion. That was obviously not clear to the other regonal stakeholders who make up the Regional Assemblty and so clarrification was sought (by them). I was delighted to join with that clarrification, fully sympathised with Cllr Johnson for the sub standard service on the Cardiff to Portsmouth route (which has needed extra coaches for two years now, not strictly within our gift without government help to allocate, but now put right from May)and also to re-affirm with him that there is no daylight between us on what OUR region should be aspiring to in terms of rail infrastructure. Its my job to deliver our part of this three legged stool and I KNOW that things are already improving from third party statistics. No complaisency here though, and I always said that June would see a visible difference. Its not unlike turning around a supertanker, there is a great deal of momentum and inertia! No, we had not fixed the 0705 down from Plymouth problem by the following day Tom - (Do cut us a bit of slack please!) but fingers crossed, I think that its probably fixed now. I will be riding it again soon, as I have done several times since, and maybe we will meet. Charles Howeson Chairman FGW

It wasn't actually that bad.... well, until I threw it into the wall anyway :p

I used to encrust mine with metal (magnesium) in Year 11, gave a new meaning to the word firefly 8)

Nope. Just because you have a job, it doesn't give you the right to tell those who want to keep their free priv to stump up for tickets. I sincerely hope you were joking about illegally using child tickets. If/when you get caught out, you could get arrested and charged with travel fraud 8).

I never said I got straight A's so I have nothing to say to that 8).

Won't respond to personal swipes on here 8)

They must be right then, all this stuff in the news about introducing an A* grade at A - Level is merely for fun. Some courses in some universities are unpopular, and after a given period of time almost anybody can be accepted provided the spaces haven't been filled by those who obtained the necessary requirement criteria.

Supply and demand is hardly a difficult concept to grasp :D
