Correction of Spelling

Am I alone in being sick to death of countless post's from people correcting other member's spelling and particularily useage of bloody apostrophe's?

Who care's!! If I wanted to learn how to use apostrophe's correctly I'd go back to school! Ditto with spelling I'd look it up on bloody Google or ask someone to proof read!
Fair enough if the member post's in complete and utter gibberish then correct it but little correction's are really starting to get silly.

I thought this was RailUK not LearnToSpeakEnglishUK?

PS: Yes I have deliberatly placed apostrophe's in the wrong place just to hack you back-seat-teacher's-pet's off!!

But, I also find spelling mistakes annoying so I don't know where I stand on this one

Have to agree on this one. Does it really matter if someone says necaserily, nessacerily or nessasserily - it's quite clear what they are saying. At the end of the day, like Jamie has said, it's just a railway forum - not a Spelling Bee or English examination!

I disagree, I have no problem with someone posting a correction - after all, it might help the person who's spelt it wrong to not do it again, thus meaning there's another word in their vocabulary they can spell correctly.

Yeah! I'm all for proper spelling and apostrophe use, and it bugs the hell out of me, but in the middle of a serious and interesting (hock discussion, the good old "learn to use your apostrophes correctly!" post just gets in the way! (And occasionally has more mistakes in it than the one it's correcting!)

Unless it's incomprehensible, let's calm down a bit!

Spelling makes up a small part of the marks. But I wasn't giving you tips, I was just pointing it out.

Class 313 is correct (for once ). English exams merely measuer your ability to recall obscure quotes withing the space of a 2-3 hour exam. And write quite fast as well.

Fair enough, I'll just stick to writing shorter essays full of (correctly spelt) long words in exams and getting a nice A on the result slip 8)

Those QWC marks can be the difference between one grade and the next, hardly something to dismiss. Besides, exams, and school are there to prepare you for the world of work. Certain careers require spelling and punctuation to be close to spot on, but here is not one of those places 8)

..true.... but you may find it rather difficult to get a good job which demands an acceptable grasp of the English language....

... and this is the voice of experience! If it wasn't for the efforts of my English teacher at school, I couldn't have achieved the postitions I did in commercial radio, the PR department of a major public transport operator, or my present position in public relations for clients in international shipping... I'm fortunate enough to get paid for reading and writing about global transport issues, including rail.

You may not think it's important to maintain standards, but hey, if you fancy a career in the media and transport press, why not practice your language skills here?
