Have people not actually bought enough bog roll for the next 12 months yet?

I haven't, because I'm not panic buying it! That said, being as there's only 2 people in my house, it lasts a while!

Tesco in Cambridge were not permitting more than 2 tins of the same item this morning - most people in the queues were having items removed by the checkout staff.

That’s going to cause upset, and to be honest rightly so. Two tins of certain items is one days supply for my household. I’m not going to go back and forth to the shops on a daily basis, so unfortunately this means simply going out and in again, or going to another shop. People will grow tired of this sooner or later.

I noticed last night that Tesco was not opening at midnight as usual but staying closed until 6am, presumably either so there were more staff about to control the hoardes, or to give them more time to restock. Probably a reasonable decision as there were 20-30 cars there, rather than the usual 5 or 6 cars.

I need to go out shopping today as I have very little in the house having been away for a couple of weeks and dreading what I might find (or not find). Thankfully I do have plenty of toilet roll anyway, but soap was one of the things I was running low on so would be nice if I could find some of that.

True, but hand sanitiser is handy (sorry) if you are out and about. MrsC (who is a bit neurotic about such things at the best of times) keeps one in the car.

She is not the only one, Mrs LAX has one in the car, and one in Her handbag, and has done for some years now, always gives a squirt after touching any surface, or at an ATM, she reckoned back then that you didn't know where people had, had their hands/fingers !

I see on the BBC website, they are saying they they have no plans for food ratioing , but surely after all the numpties have stocked their cupboards to bursting, the shops will be full of food / loo rolls again ? !
Then in 6 months they will be down the tip dumping out of date food !

Its probably a forlorn hope that they might instead donate said items to a local food bank even if only a week before they go out of date. I guess that would involve thinking about others less fortunate than themselves though...

I have noticed that the big packs of loo paper have much smaller individual rolls than the smaller 4-packs. I've only got a 24-pack of Andrex so haven't stocked up for more than a few weeks or so, and that's if we use it sparingly.

I went to Reading earlier today and there were noticeably less people on the train and in the town centre, probably only half as many as on a normal Monday.

Boots didn't have any paracetamol but one of the Superdrug stores did, although it was disappearing fairly quickly, even though the normal maximum of two packs of 16 tablets was being enforced. One customer was actually trying to persuade the cashier to let him pay for an extra two boxes separately, but was refused.

There are thousands of corner shops in the UK. All seem to be well stocked. Most people driving to their nearest supermarket drove past the products they need, several times. It seems the advertising by the big retailers has burnt its way in to our brains and we ignore other options.

You can't blame the over-70s wanting to stock up on e.g. Paracetamol if they are dependant on it for pain relief and may be confined to their homes for months. Two boxes is only four days supply at maximum dose.

Not that I'm condoning it, but I can understand why it happens.

Was in the local shop last night and they were restocking the loo rolls. 2 low life's were trying to buy them all but the shop assistant wouldn't let them.

Update local shop still has plenty of loo rolls and tins of beans none available at Aldi on logistics north. Moral of the story try your local store

I've been telling people all week that instead of stockpiling toilet roll and pasta they should be getting as much chocolate as possible but it doesn't seem to have caught on for some reason...

I am not getting locked in the house for months without biscuits. This might be the biggest health crisis of a generation but if we are expected to drink tea without biscuits we are one step closer to anarchy. Savages.

Oddly enough the till assistant at our local supermarket was saying to someone that all the chocolate had gone .

Not the two branches of Boots and the one local chemist in the York city centre that I tried — and the big Boots had no thermometers either! But in general the whole city centre much quieter than usual mid-afternoon at this time of year.

A Tesco store in south Manchester had to temporarily close this morning (Monday) due to overcrowding.

The Burnage Lane store in Burnage closed its doors for around 15 minutes to help ease the crowds.

I needed pasta. The only stuff they had was two boxes of 500g packs tagliatelle.
There were plenty of 4-packs of apple juice, but none of orange juice, so I had to buy them individually (and there weren't that many left anyway).
Virtually all the own brand cereals were gone, including the one I wanted. Plenty of more expensive cereal left though.

It's the first time I've been shopping since the "panic" started, so I wasn't sure quite what to expect.
