Cornish Night Riveira using PTAC

Some advice please. I wish to travel on above service in the seating section in January. Is my PTAC valid on this service and is it compulsory to reserve a seat.

Seat reservations aren't compulsory in the seated part of the Night Riviera and there is usually plenty of availability, especially in the off-season. That said it's free to reserve a seat so you might as well do so.

Your PTAC would be valid in the seated section of the Night Riviera as far as I can tell. The latest available PTAC staff travel restrictions don't mention anything to say it's a restricted service.

If you would like to upgrade to a room, the public upgrade fee applies.

The seated coach is counted place only so no actual seat reservations. Usually quiet off season but the past westbound couple of weeks on Friday night eastbound has been full from Exeter. Westbound showed on journey check as full and standing too from Reading.

Reported several days over summer. I've had it with no seats left in the seated bit several times...that's with noone allowed to spread over 2 seats too.

On a recent journey, I wasn't even issued a seat reservation, despite the train being pretty much empty.

Thanks for all the helpful comments. My trip will be mid week in January eastbound from Truro, so not expecting too many fellow travellers. I think it will be a more comfortable journey than a National Express coach.

Honestly, I've had more sleep on a National Express coach between Bristol and London than I have on the Night Riviera seats between Penzance and London.

I could not dissuade someone expecting a reasonable sleep from those seats highly enough. And that's from someone who actually quite likes the IET seats.

I find the seats themselves fairly comfortable.

I have a general problem with sleeping sat upright though, so on overnight journeys will always go for a bed, whether it's train, coach, plane, etc.

You might well find that GWR have a sale closer to then. In February 2018, I had a return from London to St Ives with a single compartment to myself in the sleeper on the way out and a first class advance on an HST for the return for ~ £100.

The seats on the night riveria are truly awful, even if more padded than IEP ones.
In mid week low season I've had a carriage to myself some days.

Does anyone know what happened to the down Riviera on Sunday night? According to RTT it was worked by 802110. edit just noticed that the up didn't run at all.

If you can afford it, I would strongly recommend a berth, if nothing more than for the sheer novelty.

I had the good fortune to have a berth to myself for a journey, and quite apart from getting a decent 6-ish hours of sleep (I was too excited to fall asleep before Reading!), it ticked off a smaller bucket list item (that being to travel by sleeper at least once). I still look back on my Penzance journey fondly from time to time.

I believe some passengers were denied boarding following Reading Festival due to capacity. It could really have done with the spare saloon added that evening due to a known event finishing.

Thanks again everyone. My journey is actually Truro to Birmingham and had decided to travel via London to avoid over 8 hours on the overnight direct coach service. After the feedback received I'm taking the coach as far as Bristol then the first train in the morning to Birmingham
