Cork Station Roof Collapse

The Roof at Cork Kent Station in Ireland has collapsed following a heavy downpour and wind.

...the high winds caused damage at Kent train station in Cork where a canopy over two of its platforms was blown off.

Three people were injured in the incident. One person was taken to hospital, while two others were treated at the scene.


The canopy landed on cars in an adjoining car park and a number of cars are thought to have been damaged.
Iarnród Éireann said the station has been closed.


The canopy came down on a train, which was not in service at the time.


Cork to Cobh/Midleton services have been suspended, while Dublin to Cork services are operating between Dublin and Mallow only.

"Passengers were 35 seconds from disaster"

One woman was injured when a 400m section of roof over platform 1 and 2 at Cork’s Kent Station — a busy commuter rail platform serving Cobh and Midleton — collapsed during high winds just after 3pm.

The 3pm Cobh train, with up to 50 people on board, had pulled away just seconds before. One witness said three people on the platform fled in terror as the structure came down.

Train driver Ian Fuller said it was a miracle that no one was seriously injured. “I have never seen anything like it. The Cobh train had just left and it was exactly 35 seconds after that when the wind picked up and all of a sudden huge chunks of the roof were in the air. A big piece lifted off and smashed off the wall next to our canteen, but luckily it didn’t come through the window.”

Blimey. Glad nobody was seriously hurt, I can't imagine a falling canopy being conducive to anyone's health.

Looking at the roof now, I'd say that was far more than almost.

Annoying thing was, although the roof looked shabby and uncared for from the outside, from the inside, the station looked modern and the roof looked tidy. Time for a new roof at a time when Irish Rail have little money; let's hope they are insured.
