Just back from a week in Copenhagen.

I was impressed with their driverless Metro system, clean and very frequent.

I also took the S train to Malmo, which had several features which would be nice to see here.

Comfortable second class seats (2-2)
Info displays that list what time the train is due to arrive at each station
Each seat has a power socket in the luggage rack above (should be retro possible?)

becoming pretty much standard in Switzerland too, including in refurbished versions of older trains

Just a quick question, why put a power socket in the luggage rack as opposed to floor level? Surely having dangling cables is a hazard?

That just hung down to the table' to be fair I didn't see an aisle passenger use one.

Floor level would be awkward to get to and would be kicked?

new DB emus also have power sockets in the overhead luggage rack, I suppose it makes it more obvious and you're less likely to forget it

As a pedantic point... The S-Trains are the local trains (red, an almost hexagonal bulging shape, 3+3 seating that never fills up, and some even have a carriage solely for bikes, allowed at any time of day). Going to Malmo and beyond is the Øresundståg - a service run by an uncomfortable hybrid of companies after the DSB/First joint venture failed miserably on the international services.

They seem to have fixed the wifi service on the Øresundstågen as well - it's almost usable in places.

Also logical as there are usually power lines in the ceilings of coaches, which can easily be diverted to the luggage racks.

The thing I don't like about those trains, and the other similar ones, is that you really do need to be in the right place to get the low floor access doors - or else there are some rather nasty steps. Not good if you have a buggy, wheelchair, bike or just heavy bags on wheels.

Otherwise, they're huge inside. Imagine if we could have trains that spacious on HS2! That is unless we let Virgin get at them.

Well, the size of the S-Tog and Oresund trains is due to the Danish/Scandinavian loading gauges: Virgin would love to run a train that big in the UK if the clearance with there with a tilting train. The loading gauge (esp the width) is better than in other European countries and it shows (esp in Sweden, where there is practically space to play tennis across the train width!)

I was joking about Virgin. I expect they'd love to have such a train and would fit it out like an Airbus A380!
