Cookie preferences on forum

This morning upon opening my forum page, a green box asked for cookie preferences. This has never happened before with the forum.

Is this a legitimate request, or malware similar to the filestore pest that seemed to occur years ago.

Also it's a classic not really compliment one (as I understand it) in that accepting all is much easier and more prominent option than rejecting all.

You can't reject all unless you want not to log in to the forum.

Yep. I don't mind an occasional dialog that asks you yes/no to cookie settings. But this one is the really annoying type that forces you to individually click dozens (hundreds?) of times to individually remove each company I've never heard of to remove their 'legitimate interest' cookie permission claims. In the end I gave up. Posting this from a 'private browsing/incognito' session.

Usually when I see that style of cookie box on a website, I never go back to that site.

Another thing that seems to have changed is that as soon as you read a topic it changes immediately to non-highlighted in the list of topics, which is presumably related to the cookie issue. Not seem the cookie prompt myself though.

It could have been, or it could be that they've changed their ad provider. Also, GDPR requires (well, suggests) periodic confirmation of consent, so it may just have reached time to renew them.

Not true. The dialog that I saw was the typical one which doesn't give you the ability to block functional cookies. So you would be able to log in, you just wouldn't be able to stay logged in past the end of the browser session.

Ah, so it's still the green box!
It does happen from time to time, happened to me a few years ago. Puzzled me at first. You could searching RailUK Forums for cookies. As VT used to say - 'These cookies are yummy' .. or something like that when accepting.

Although the interesting thing for me is... I didn't accept - at least, not in any way that the Browser should remember. When I saw how much work it would be to reject the cookies, I just closed the Browser Window, and opened an Incognito Window in Chrome, and accepted the recommended cookies there instead. If my understanding of how things are supposed to work is correct, that shouldn't have caused any change in my normal cookie settings or any recognition that I had accepted anything. Yet when I came back a few hours later (in a fresh, normal, session), the dialog had gone!

I think my solution was clearing cookies or maybe clearing the cache on my usual browser. I think I was signed in too but again it was a long time ago, something like: was trying to post - then the green box popped up.

Incognito simply prevents cookies being stored on your computer and whatever you are looking at to not show up in your search history / log of sites visited; the websites are still storing their own side of things.

True. But cookies, by definition, are stored client side rather than server side.

It wasn't just me then. The pop up is of the very irratating kind with no Reject All button and the 'legitimate interest' middle option as default.
