Conundrum

I have a decision to make which is really perplexing me, and I wondered what you would do in the same situation.

I have received an invitation to an assessment centre for DB Cargo in late January next year for the role of trainee driver. Now obviously I was very happy about that but it turns out to be a silver lining with a cloud. This is because they require me to resit all the tests even though I passed them earlier this year, but haven't yet had an MMI. I've queried this with them and apparently its company policy.

To further complicate matters I have applications in with 2 TOCs, both of which just require a DMI and MMI, so I suspect that if I redo any of the tests and fail them then it will affect those applications adversely. I have asked DB that if I should by chance pass an MMI between now and the assessment centre date, whether I will still need to attend. I haven't heard back about that yet.

So my dilemma is whether to attend the assessment with DB and hope it all goes OK or not take a chance.

I would just wait until mid January and see if any of the other 2 TOCs get in touch, if not worry about it then, still almost a couple of months away.

Just see how things go, although application processes can take a while I would have thought you’d hear from the TOC’s before the end of January if not just carry on with DB, unless you felt you really struggled with the psychometrics I wouldn’t worry about taking them again if you’ve already done and passed them

Waiting is the only option I have at the moment but I'm not at all confident that either of the TOC's will come up with the goods - especially as I've been waiting for a DMI for one of them since March!

Yeah if they don’t get back to you and you feel the tests were okay I’d go ahead with DB as that would be almost a year waiting for a DMI.

The fact that you haven't had an MMI is ridiculous it should be done the day of the stage 2 assessments. And with DB it's been quite a fast experience. I sat my assessments in early September had DMI in October and got contract through last week to start early January so DB are good in that respect also it's the biggest rail firm in the UK, you would be silly to turn down that opportunity

I would certainly accept the invite for now, then if you get a subsequent invite from one of the other TOCs to your MMI or DMI you could consider cancelling the assessment day.

What the others have said, I’d be happy sitting the assessments again. Plus you know exactly what’s coming so it should be even easier next time.

I can’t believe you’ve waited that long for an DMI. I did my DMI first last month, sat my Assessments last week and did them all plus the MMI in one day, one after the other. I was offered the job the day after, have my medical coming up this week and assuming that’s ok I start on the 17th Dec!

I think you're probably the exception to the rule but well done and good luck.

I've been hit by a double whammy of a TOC that has put the process on hold for 7 months and by DB having this inexplicable rule about having to do the whole lot again!

I have said i will attend of course, but I'm hoping there will be a resolution before then

What happens if worst happens and you fail the assessments? Does that effect your other applications?

Yes it would as far as I'm aware, which is why it's causing me some angst
