Contactless where Heathrow is a waypoint

This evening, amongst many other journies I did Paddington to Heathrow Central on either TFL Rail or Elizabeth Line depending upon when the label changes, and then Heathrow Terminal 2/3 to Hatton Cross on Picadilly.

It is my belief that because there is no OSI between Heathrow Central and Heathrow Terminal 2/3 and in any case Heathrow is outside of “normal” Oyster I’m stuffed and it’ll be charged far more than Paddington to Hatton Cross by tube but could someone confirm the regs please? It may just be because of my inebriated state (which is why I went this way - needed easy toilet access) but I can’t figure out the rules using either Google or Mike’s site.

The annoying thing is only faffing around with Hatton Cross because staying at a hotel in T4 when T4 itself is shut (not flying it’s just cheap). Methinks T4 rail links could still be open given how busy hotel has been or perhaps it’s a misleading impression due to the Sunderland game

If you got a bus from Hatton Cross (given there’s not many other ways to get to a hotel at T4 at the moment - I’d know having been in the same situation!), it probably would’ve been easier (and cheaper without the added, albeit relatively small Tube fare) to go to Terminal 5’s rail station (which is also served by TfL Rail and will be by the Elizabeth Line) and take the bus to Terminal 4 from there.

I can't give information about the ticketing arrangements.but it quicker taking the 90 from Hayes and Harlington station than going to Heathrow for Hatton cross.

The actual result appears to have been that the daily zone 6 cap applied for all my travel yesterday, without any extra charges for using Heathrow. Not sure what to make of this.

Was aware of some of above suggestions (although my thanks regardless) but didn’t want to use T5 as thought zero chance of avoiding extra fee and was additionally concerned about late night service availability.

That’s exactly as expected. Although an individual Paddington to Heathrow journey on TfL Rail has a special fare, it doesn't affect the zone 6 cap. IIRC it’s worked that way ever since TfL took over from Heathrow Connect.

The TfL Rail/Crossrail single fare to Heathrow is so high that you will almost always reach the daily Zones 1-6 cap if you make any other journeys that day. So the issue of additional fares for the Tube is almost trite.

They are equivalent to the 'paper' travelcard in each case.

Heathrow is outside of “normal” Oyster

AIUI the way it's supposed to work, and mostly does work is.

Travel between terminals within heathrow is free.

For tube services to/from heathrow normal fares are charged.

For TfL rail/elizibeth line services to/from heathrow there is a premium on the single fares, but it is subject to the normal capping rules for zones 1-6.

For Heathrow express services to/from heathrow there is an even more premium single fare and the fare is not subject to capping.

For travel from Paddington, whether to charge the TfL rail fare or the Heathrow express fare is determined by the gate line used at Paddington, this can lead to mis-charging when trains use "wrong" platforms at paddington.
