I'm going to be in London for a day in June. I'll be travelling mostly in zone 1 & 2. As being in London is a rarity for myself I'll be using my contactless debit card. Am I right in thinking that my card will be capped at the day travelcard rate?

Yes, it will be capped at £7.70 if you only touch in and out in Zone 1 and Zone 2. There is no day travelcard fare for only these zones.

If you venture further, the cap for Zones 1-6 is £14.10.

Further to the above answer, the cap increases with each extra zone so a quick trip to zone 3 won't mean the zone 1-6 cap.

The only other thing to note is don't stay in the system too long without touching out and back in again. Depending on the day you should aim to touch out after 90 minutes or so. Actual logical journeys will be fine, but going all round the overground loop in one go will be too long.

Railcard discounts only work with PAYG Oyster.

No. Network Railcard is not one of the railcards that can be added to Oyster. There is no means available to reflect the minimum fare.
