Contactless payment query

I was making a journey from Vauxhall to Surbiton earlier this week. Because of delays it was quicker to catch a train Vauxhall to Waterloo and then a non-stop train Waterloo to Surbiton rather than a stopping service from Vauxhall to Surbiton.

I touched in at Vauxhall and then out at Surbiton with a contactless payment card. I mentioned this to a friend who said I should have touched out and then back in at Waterloo as well. Is this correct? My understanding was that there is only the need to touch in/out at beginning and end of the journey.

Would I have had to pay again or pay a penalty if my payment card was checked on the Waterloo to Vauxhall segment of the journey?

For contactless, what you have done is 100% correct. IMHO it is not up to you to indicate to the system what route you have taken, as long as you touch in and touch out (of course, if it is in your favour to use a pink reader to ensure you are charged a lower fare, you may choose to do that).

(If you were checked by revenue protection during your journey between Vauxhall and Waterloo - or even between Waterloo and Vauxhall - it would have been determined that you had a valid ticket).

You tapped in at Vauxhall and your ticket was valid as you remained within the Oyster/contactless zones until you tapped out.

It would be an entirely different story of course if you had a paper ticket with the same route as the one that the contactless system thought you took.

What do you mean? While the reasoning for validity (and hence, I suppose the "story"!) is different, I think such a route would still be permitted on a paper London Terminals to Surbiton ticket.

Bearing in mind that both Vauxhall and Waterloo are members of the London Terminals fares group, and assuming that the train from Waterloo to Surbiton does not stop at Vauxhall, I think it may be valid because there is no rule explicitly preventing it.
