So Chiltern is now accepting contactless out as far as Wycombe. This is great news. So, I get on at Wycombe and head into London for the day, paying by Contactless. I use the same contactless card on LUL services and for the return journey back to Wycombe. Does Chiltern talk to LUL re fares so I would only be charged the same as a Travel card from Wycombe or will Chiltern charge me for a return to Marylebone then LUL charge me up to the fare cap for all the tube journeys? Would the latter be more expensive than a travel card (I suspect it would be)?

Yes, Chiltern have to tell London Underground what to charge for journeys on its services outside London.
The caps from High Wycombe appear to be £45 all day, and £31.70 (after 0930) as stated on 'MikeWh's Oyster Fares Central website - https://oysterfares.com/fare-finder/ which is slightly cheaper than the Travelcard prices, but no railcard discounts are available. The information should also be here https://content.tfl.gov.uk/national-rail-adult-fares.pdf, but isn't, which isn't very good.

All of the extensions are done using the 'original' TfL PAYG system (i.e. Cubic). So the technical arrangements are the same as they would be for a station within Zones 1-9 - except of course that Oyster isn't accepted. As I understand it, data isn't passed from Chiltern to TfL per se - it goes from a Cubic gateline or validator to the Cubic backend system.
The contactless extensions have daily caps based on the equivalent outboundary Travelcards. Therefore, if you are travelling as an adult without a Railcard, you'll generally pay the same price as you would with a paper ticket. In some cases it might even work out cheaper, as the contactless system charges you for smaller caps (e.g. Zones 1-2) plus individual extension fares, if that works out cheaper for your journey history.
Of course if you have a Railcard, this can't be applied to contactless so you are likely to be better off sticking with paper tickets.

How would it work if the return was on a "peak" service? The Travelcard appears not to have peak restrictions in the evenings, but the single does.
The off-peak cap applies all day from 09:30 onwards - in fact, the off-peak cap starts slightly earlier at some stations, to mirror the former restrictions on paper Travelcards.
So your evening peak journeys count towards the off-peak cap and if you hit the cap, you won't be charged any more.
