Contactless in London and onward travel

I've been moving around London a bit on contact less, but need to end up going from Waterloo to Haslemere. Will I need to get a single from Waterloo or is there some option for tapping in and transferring to a Zone 6 boundary ticket? Or would that be more expensive?

Ultimately, what's my best bet for getting back quickly?

Whether it’s Contactless or PAYG you have to touch out somewhere, or you’ll incur a maximum fare. Boundary zone tickets are not valid in conjunction with PAYG or Contactless, they’re only valid with zonal fares such as season or day travelcards.

If you want to take a fast train to Haslemere I think Clapham Junction will probably be the last calling point.

Thanks. Wasn't sure if there was something clever I could do there. So it's just balancing getting a ticket from Waterloo against getting a train from Victoria or Waterloo there and then getting a new ticket

If you were already capped on contactless it does seem you are paying twice. If capped you could take a stopper to a zone 6 station such as Surbiton, touch out and use a single from there onwards, but is it worth the extra time taken?

I suspect the possibility of wanting to extend from PAYG to somewhere outside the zones was never really considered as part of the PAYG design.

I don't think I'll have capped yet. East Croydon to Shadwell, and a few dlr trips, then from canning Town to Waterloo.

I'd rather pay a the £2 something difference than hang around on a cold CLJ platform

You can't do that with Oyster sadly. However you could tap out at a Zone 6 station such as Subiton and then with a ticket, take a train to Woking where you could pick a fast train to Haslemere. How abut that? Tickets to Haslemere from Clapham Junction are a little cheaper than from Waterloo but not much, services are also much slower from there.

If you are touching out at Surbiton then you need an onward ticket from there. At no point are you using a travelcard so a boundary zone ticket is not applicable.

In essence the only way to do clever things with Boundary Zone tickets is in conjunction with a Travelcard. It's not possible with contactless or Oyster Pay-as-you-go.
