Connections with secret fare

If you were given a Seatfrog secret fare i.e from Paddington to Cardiff which will allow you to connect with the final train of the night i.e Cardiff to Coryton, what are the rules if the secret fare service is delayed to the point you miss the final connection to Coryton? Are they still responsible for transporting you to your final destination if you hold just an anytime single from Cardiff to Coryton?

Yes, the seatfrog single fare is a valid national rail ticket, you hold split tickets for your full journey and therefore the normal rules apply should you be stranded or the like, as if you held any other split ticket combination, or through ticket.

Obviously this relies on your itinerary being valid. If you get a secret fare service that is scheduled to arrive after the last train to Coryton for example, there is no entitlement.

It's important to note that any connections must meet the official Minimum Connection Time (MCT) to be considered valid. At Cardiff Central the MCT is 7 minutes.

You can see this here on the BR Times website, which is unofficial but draws its data from the same industry feeds that journey planners like National Rail Enquiries (NRE) and ticket selling websites like GWR use.

It is also advisable that you buy your connecting Cardiff-Coryton ticket ahead of time, so that there can be no suggestion you 'knew' of a delay/cancellation that would lead to you missing the connection. For that reason I'd suggest buying a paper or eTicket as you planned, rather than using PAYG even if it's slightly cheaper.
