I was wondering do you think it would be a good idea to remove the buffers and re-connect the separate bits of track at Ormskirk & Headbolt Lane, to allow through-running for Northern into Liverpool Central from Preston and Wigan/Bolton/Manchester, once their anticipated bi/tri-mode trains are up and running? With battery-powered trains, Northern wouldn't need to order trains with 3rd-rail shoes, as these could run under their own power over the fairly short distances involved.

Also, do you think a new interchange station at Lathom for Burscough would be worthwhile, at the site where the Preston line crosses the Southport line? With a big car park included for a park & ride scheme, this would improve connectivity between the two lines and their origins/destinations quite a lot, compared with the fair walk between the two existing Burscough stations.
