I want to travel from hexham to Warrington Bank Quay [[stn]WBQ[/stn]] on 27th dec.

When I look at journeys from Carlisle to [stn]WBQ[/stn] I can get one for 16 pounds but the same train with the connecting service from Hexham is over 40 pounds. But a single from Hexham to Carlisle is 11 pounds.

If I buy the advance ticket from Carlisle to Warrington but my connecting train is delayed / cancelled can i travel or will I have to buy a new ticket?

Details of journey

Hexham 20:03 arrive Carlisle 21:04
Carlisle 21:26 arrive Warrington 23:02.

It is so confusing virgin trains website says if I miss the advance ticket train I must buy a new ticket, but I have read on here if you miss a connection because of a delayed train you are OK, but does this have to be one single booking?

Please help. Thanks

If you are delayed, you will be allowed on the next Virgin Trains service at no extra charge, despite having separate tickets.

However this is cheaper using exactly the same trains:
Hexham 20:03 - Haydon Bridge 20:12 £3 Anytime Day Single
Haydon Bridge 20:12 - Carlisle 21:04-21:26 - Warrington Bank Quay 23:02 £16.50 Advance Single

So a total of £19.50 single.
