Im going to watch macc town v cheltenham on saturday, however return is a staggering £54, but i plan to get a return congleton to kidsgrove £3ish then get a west midlands day ranger which covers me as far as worcester for £20,worcester to cheltenham is £8.80 so a saving of over £20,but can i use a XC from new st to cheltenham using both the worcester to cheltenham and the day ranger , because technically it dosent go through worcester but by passes it ????? any ideas ??

If the train doesn't stop then you can't split tickets there if it's only a day ranger. It'd have to be a ranger of 3 in 7 days or more validity.

i thought it would be dubious !!! cheers for that, il have to see if i can go via worcester then or look for another option

That's the UK rail ticketing system for you. I could name a really insane one where the price jumps by 3 times the price just for 5 miles extra but I don't want to risk going off-topic! ;) You just have to realise this can occur, and when it does, ensure you are not ripped off (I think I could go as far to say defrauded but no doubt some will disagree) by the TOCs. Anyway, you managed it, so well done :)

If you haven't already purchased those tickets there is another saving to be had. Instead of the Birmingham - Cheltenham Off Peak Day Return (CDR) at £20.50, you can buy a Hereford - Cheltenham CDR for £17.50. This ticket is valid for travel via Birmingham, so you can use it to 'start short' at New Street with no need to change trains if you are on a through service to Cheltenham from Stoke-on-Trent.

There is another bigger saving to be had - I've sent a PM to explain.

No, the rover is only valid as far as Bromsgrove on the route to Cheltenham, plus the train would need to stop at the station where you change from one ticket to another.

However, there's a better option (above) anyway.

thanks guys !!! its a minefield isnt it ??? :)
It can be, but there are many good folk here who will attempt to guide you through that minefield.

That said, I stepped on a mine the other day - well it should've been a dud and not taken my leg off! :p;):D but.....

.....I got my first ever UPFN! Actually quite proud and I may even frame it, safe in the knowledge that I did nothing wrong, my ticket was valid and I've already received a verbal reassurance from someone 'high up' at the TOC concerned that it'll be quashed.
