That I get, but this was a train that was 8 coaches throughout and was on all of its diagrams all day!

I'm guessing this was a TGV?

In the Netherlands all tracks are numbered, it does not matter if those tracks are adjacent to a platform. If a new track is added later on, they simply continue counting. If a track is removed later on, the number is not reused if higher track numbers exist.

This can lead to remarkable platform layouts, such as this one from Dordrecht:

Though that layout would allow any train from any origin to serve any platform

Mind you, loco-hauled load 16 would probably be interesting

In Paris there are several groups of interconnected stations, though usually different parts of the complex have different names. Some (possibly all) have tracks numbered uniquely across the whole complex, leading to some very large platform numbers.
