Confused about what to do.

Dear Prosecutions Team,

I am writing to sincerely apologise and take responsibility in regards to an incident which occurred on 24th of February 2026 on the train from Hitchin to Finsbury Park.

I was travelling from Hitchin to Stevenage with a valid ticket and had accidentally missed my stop due to having had my headphones in and being asleep, and was then approached by a train inspector around Welwyn North.

It may be that they don’t believe this, but I don't see what else you can really say. As long as this is the truth, and only you can know that, I suggest that you leave the wording as is.

I explained my situation to her, and she advised me to take the first train back from Finsbury Park to Stevenage, which I did as soon as I got to the station. I was given unclear instructions about taking a picture of myself back on the train to Stevenage- I had asked multiple times for clarification due to me being autistic and received no further correspondence, so I have attached the picture I took to the best of my ability as was requested of me. I understand, however, that this was my fault and I am deeply ashamed of my unorganisation and the consequences it has caused to the railway.

I had no intentions of evading the fare, however I understand that overtravelling is still an offence and for that I am deeply regretful. This is absolutely unacceptable and I am aware of the financial loss it has caused to the railway and I am determined to ensure I never overtavel again and always hold a valid ticket for my journey.

I'm writing to respectfully ask as to whether you would be open to resolving this issue out of court. I fully agree to pay any outstanding fare as well as any settlement or administrative costs deemed appropriate.

I would suggest this minor adjustment here.

I think that your letter is good. We can't say whether they will prosecute you or not, and it's important that you understand that they will soon run out of patience, but they may settle once more on this occasion.

I think the best thing you can do is send the letter with the above refinements, plus those suggested by @WesternLancer and any other comments from other members. Note that I began typing this before post #30 was made, so consider those wording changes as well, as they seem good.

Obviously I have noted the comments of others on the forum. At the end of the day GTR will either decide to accept the points you make and offer a settlement, or not do so and it will escalate to court.

If you want to send this letter (for example if you can't substantiate any medial condition etc that might exacerbate it, which would indeed strengthen your case if you can add it) I think the letter is generally acceptable - however I would move this sentence to an earlier paragraph because it makes more sense for it to be elsewhere than in the paragraph you have placed it in the draft

Thank you so much for your advice, here is a revised version of the letter- I'm not sure if me mentioning the past incident is a good idea or not but I felt it would be best to just be fully honest with them in the hopes they understand that this was a one-off mistake and I have very much learned my lesson since the last time.

The journey is around 10 minutes,

I do not travel to Finsbury Park every day, I meant as in in I have always paid my fare since wherever I go. I was going to Stevenage to see a friend on this day.
The incident I had before was also for me travelling from Finsbury Park, not to Stevenage as I was doing this time, so it's not the same situation at all, I'm not sure where you got that from.

1. It's not. It's 5 minutes. With no intermediate stops. Nobody reading your letter will believe that you would fall asleep in that time, knowing that you would be expecting to get off so soon.

I undesrtand completely and thank you, I've amended my letter to include all the above suggestions, including mention of my past incident, just waiting for it to be approved by moderators at the moment so that you guys can see the final draft.
