Confused about CIV, Dutch Flyer, and separate tickets

Hi all,

Can anyone help me understand the CIV rules please?

I understand that the CIV rules mean that if one leg of a journey is delayed, then you can use later trains for later legs, even if your tickets wouldn't otherwise be valid on later legs (much like how delays work with advanced tickets in the UK). There are a few things I'm not clear on, though:

  1. If travelling from, say, Amsterdam to Zurich, would it be necessary to buy tickets for the whole journey at once, or will buying individual tickets be OK?
  2. If buying individual tickets is OK, would there be a problem if one ticket was entirely within one country, e.g. Düsseldorf - Frankfurt?
  3. If buying individual tickets is OK, what are the rules about connection times?
  4. http://www.stenaline.co.uk/ferry/rail-and-sail/holland/terms-conditions/ says
unless the convention of international transport of travellers and their luggage per railway (CIV) is valid
but I can't quite understand what this is saying. If the ferry is late, would it be treated under CIV the same as if a train had been late?

Thanks
Ian

1. Individual tickets are OK
2. Possibly, e.g. DB online tickets wholly within Germany are not endorsed CIV, however if you buy them from a ticket machine they are.
3. I guess if the route shows on an official online booking site, you should be OK
4. I guess so

If I understand the Dutch Flyer correctly, the tickets are valid to any station in The Netherlands and are not tied to specific trains.

If one held an advance type international ticket from Hoek van Holland or Rotterdam, then it is likely that this wouldn't cover delays on the ferry from Harwich, though it would obviously cover delays on the rail segment between origin and destination on that ticket.

Thanks all. We decided not to risk it and just take the Eurostar instead.
