I'm confused about the ex LM 150/2, why did LM have them and where they went after the introduction of the class 172s.

Can anyone help?

Regional Railways Central, under BR, used 150/2 vehicles as centre cars for three carriage "hybrid" 150/0 units, which were numbered in the range 150003 - 019 (two of the hybrid units used spare 150/2 vehicles, 57209 and 57212, after their counterparts were written off in collisions). The cab end corridor connections allowed them to be used as intermediate vehicles with a full walkthrough capability for passengers and train crew. These formations were perpetuated under Central Trains and, later, London Midland before they were replaced by class 172 units on the Snow Hill lines.

Of the eight complete 150/2 units that were with London Midland before they were reallocated, six went to Northern Rail, while the other two, 150202/216, went to First Great Western. FGW also gained the two "spare" vehicles; 57209 and 57212; which due to their lack of toilets have been formed into two hybrid 150/9 formations with their new operator.

The six 150/2s that Northern gained (150204/206/210/214/220/226) were a direct replacement for the three 180s that the company had been hiring, while the two complete 150/2 units that went to FGW (150202/216) replaced a pair of ATW 150s that were being hired in previously. The two spare 150/2 vehicles, 57209 and 57212, were the subject of a separate bid that also included prototype units 150001 and 150002.

As the 150/2 units had been split across separate hybrid formations, carrying two liveries in their later days with London Midland, reformation back into their original two carriage formations created a few piebald Central Trains/Network West Midlands liveried sets.

Im more confused why. Lm kept hold of three 150/1s
Mainly because the platforms on the Marston Vale line can't take more than 2 x 20 metre carriages, as far as I know. Retaining a second unit on a Hereford diagram helps to ensure that train crew keep up their knowledge on the unit type, mainly for the benefit of stock moves, presumably.

Did RR/Central/LM have to rearrange the units to cycle which cab was running dead? If not, they must have been in a bit of a state when they were eventually split?

The number and formations of the hybrid units changed a bit down the years (Under BR and early Central Trains there typically were less Centro hybrid units than was later the case) and there were generally a couple of Centro 150/2s running around as 2-car units at any one time as well. The 150/2 vehicles were always inserted in the middle of 150/1 units when they were formed up as hybrid units, though.

The formations became more fixed when the sets were overhauled under Central Trains in 2005/6 (I think it was), and LM did find that there was work to be done to bring the cabs of the intermediate 150/2 vehicles back up to an operational condition when they came to split them back into their original formations for onward cascade, the "dead" cabs having been regarded as a handy source of spare parts in some instances.

Thanks SprinterGuy

I have another question, what happened to the ex Anglia 150s?

They're with Arriva Trains Wales.

All except for 150245 did spend a short time with Central. Interestingly, as 245 went straight to Wales it missed out on having new door buttons fitted and as far as I know still retains the original-style ones, despite receiving the ATW refurbishment.

I noticed this the other day, wonder why they haven't made the buttons standardised

150245 wasn't part of the original Anglia 150 fleet. It arrived later from Scotrail. Initial units after the 101s finished & the 156s first transferred away where 213/217/227/229/231/235/237/255/257.

I suspect TPWS/OTMR gubbins hadn't been fitted to the cabs either (given there was no real need to).
