While I appreciate the need to tackle misuse, neither random scribble nor a date is effective at that, since the ticket is legitimately still usable after that date, on uncompleted sections of the journey.
Depends upon the ticket type. The majority of period returns in this part of the country have break-of-journey restrictions.

It might be effective if instead the guard wrote the codes for the last and next station call at the time of the check, showing where it's been used already, but I've never seen that done.

This problem will be solved when everything moves to barcodes, as a scan does record that sort of detail and using anything to physically mark tickets will no longer be practice.

Indeed, but it'll be a while yet for me, as my local station's ticket office and TVMs issue all tickets on CCST, and many of my journeys involve cross London transfers.

Ah apologies, I missed that. I didn't think anywhere really had restrictions on the return portion though, I know LNWR likes them on the outward portions for example

Only 8A has restrictions on the return half. It isn't even clear if that was intentional, and enforcement is at best patchy. Most 8A tickets are Transport for Wales set and don't carry any other restrictions e.g. time ones.

Having All Line Rover for the last 55 years i've had 1st and 2nd class 7and 14 days, and enjoyed every minute of it.
I all ways keep my ALR in a plastic wallet along with my Senior Railcard together.
i always travel with a small case on wheels and always use a wide gate.
Always have your name printed on the top of the ticket.
These few steps help you to enjoy your holiday.

I've never had any staff problems (or writing) on my various rovers (2x Cheshire Day Rangers, 2x Lancashire Day Ranger, 1x South Pennines Day Ranger, and 1 Merseyrail special offer £2 ticket).

However a majority of the trains I've used those tickets on have been Northern, so other TOCs may vary.

And even then, the 8A restriction code only seems to apply Monday to Friday. I assume that means you can break your journey at weekends?

Had a few problems over the last thirty years, police called over at Brighton, when the gate guardian thought it was a fake. No such ticket could exist. Asking for my photo id card a couple of times on GWR. And refusal access to a couple of lounges. But on the whole they are great fun. The look of horror on the guards face, when 50003 blew up in spectacular fashion near Honiton, where are you going? Fort William! Credit to BR, they met me at Waterloo with a minibus, fast drive to back entrance at Euston, escort onto the train which was held for me.
