i have been offered s job as a conductor for northern, but these strikes are really putting me off, can anyone give me a proper insight before I decide to commit to the job role, I’ve tried looking on the internet for facts about it and all I see is northern saying they will keep the conductors/ second person and garenteee jobs but RMT are still arguing with them. Also why would they have a big intake of conductors recently if northern are thinking of scrapping the conductors ? Please help

I might be wrong, but I think Northern's goal is to have a 2nd person on board, mainly for customer service/revenue, rather than safety.

I asked Northern via facebook what the difference between a "guard" and "on board staff" (ie ticket inspection, the ramp etc) and their reply was "guards are on-board staff".

They are absolutely correct. OBS stands for on-board supervisor not staff. If you want a meaningful answer ask a meaningful question. Not that it helps the OP with their concerns, though I can’t see how anybody can reassure them when the debate is so polarised and full of misleading information and exaggerated claims.

The answer is at the moment is that Northern are guaranteeing a second person on the trains until the end of their franchise (2025). What capacity that is in is unknown I.e. whether it will be in the current capacity or whether itll just be for revenue and safety - not opening the doors.

As for post-2025, its unknown at the moment.
